If you can take comms with anyone else, it is in your best interest to do so. Though she is not an inherently bad person or professor she was extremely condescending despite the fact that she is only a couple years older than us. If you do the work and practice your presentations you have a good chance of doing well in the class but if you don't understand an assignment you're screwed because half of the time she wasn't really sure what we were doing either. Some days she was nice but most days she was really condescending and not just in person but also in her grading in the way that she would grade harshly for no reason and blame it on random things that usually weren't in the rubric and if you talked to her about it in her office hours she wouldn't really explain what you did. But the pièce de résistance was when she asked us to do an anonymous feedback form and the next class she literally made a slideshow essentially shaming us and making us feel bad about the constructive feedback we gave her--to the point where she even quoted some of us and with each quote she pulled from the feedback she would explain how it was our fault that we weren't happy with the course. But what really solidified everyone's shock was her saying that someone writing that she could work on being "defensive" in terms of constructive criticism in the feedback form was a "racial micro-agression" and basically she implied that it was because she was a black woman trying to earn a phd and we as students were intimidated by that...In other words, try to get any other comms professor. |

Comm is an overall easy class if you show up, do the work, and present well, but she made the assignments overly complicated and very condescending. We were given a review session to review her and give feedback, and when we were able to say how we felt, she made us feel bad for it. She never explained things correctly, and when we had questions, she would make us feel bad and be so condescending. She then one day claimed we were being prejudiced against her when that was NOT the case. She is a young teacher which I get and still learning but she needs to learn how to take criticism and not put it against the students wanting to learn and understand the material. With grading, she's not too harsh but sometimes would take points off for random stuff not on the rubric, and when questioned, she would never fully explain. She's an okay teacher only because the class itself is pretty easy. |
