Don't let the reviews from 2022 fool you! Try to avoid his 462 course, his review material is entirely based on another professor |

The course that Dr. Ainane teaches is one of the more interesting courses I've taken thus far. Throughout the semester, he led discussions on a diverse selection of topics revolving around the impact of engineering on social change. His class has two parts: lectures that often had guest speakers from either UMD staff or other professors knowledgeable of the week's topic and discussion sections that he would personally lead. While the lectures were a hit-or-miss, I really enjoyed the discussion sections. You could really tell that Dr. Ainane is passionate about this course and that he is very qualified to teach it. If it were based on this information alone, I would easily give Dr. Ainane 5 stars. However, my biggest gripe about this course is how the grading in the class works. There were very few assignments for this class, which was nice for relieving workloads but bad because every assignment weighs so heavily into the final grade. What makes it more frustrating is that Dr. Ainane would grade these assignments relatively harshly, the high of most assignments being low 90's. This would leave very little flexibility for reasonably getting an A in the course. Assignment could also be a bit ambiguous at times. He would occasionally assign these fun activities to be due the following class and never visit them again. He also pushed some due dates back at the last minute, which could be a bit chaotic but nice at the same time. Dr. Ainane is a pretty personable guy. If you are looking for a class that gets you engaged and thinking about engineering on a global scale with a professor who is committed to the class, this is definitely a class you should take. Just note that it won't be an easy A course despite how the class may appear. |

Take this class. Dr. Ainane is one of the most passionate, student-centered professors I have ever met. He is not overly concerned with grades, exams, or homeworks - he just wants to have a good discussion and get the students engaged. |

ENME201 Expecting a P Anonymous 01/04/2022 |
I took Sami for the first time he taught ENME201 and he was magnificent. He brought in fantastic speakers from around the country, and with so many different background and perspectives on mechanical engineering. We also had a final project of building a business plan for the life. The criteria was nonexistent; his only goal was the we put some thought into our future for our own sake of planning. This was a pass/fail class and he would often say "The only way you fail this class is if you don't get anything out of it," and he stood by that statement, changing lecture topics on a dime to whatever topics the students asked him to talk about. This felt more like a very helpful career workshop than a class and Sami felt more like a mentor than a professor. |

I enjoyed Dr. Ainane's lectures for this course because there was a good blend of notes/conceptual explanations mixed with him solving example problems. There was a new policy for midterms and the final exam this semester, where it was an online quiz with a multiple choice/fill in the blank format. For many, the new format made it easier than what the written exams would have been, but for some including myself, it became an inconvenience, as there was no partial credit. Regardless, I am not certain that this format will be used in the future. In general, the content of the course is not too challenging if you put in a good amount of work, and do the homework assignments. Additionally, there are a hefty amount of Youtube videos from various sources which can help break down any confusing control systems related concepts. |

This is a difficult rating to give because programming is not easily taught through lectures, you really just have to use the studios to practice, and make sure you do all the homework. He's a nice guy and tries to answer every question as well as he can, but sometimes he didn't have the answer or other students would correct him. As his first semester teaching I'd say he did well though, he kept everyone informed and was clear about the expectations of the studios and exams. There was some disorganization but I'd expect that to go away as he gets more experience. |

This was Sami's first semester teaching ENAE202 and I felt he did a decent job. The lectures were okay and got the general concepts across however they could be confusing sometimes. Its extremely important that you go to studio and do the homework. This is where you can actually apply the concepts and learn how to code. Also go to office hours if you have questions the TA's were amazing for this course. Sami also curves the midterm and final a lot and try's to go for a bell curve. Averages on the final and midterm were low-mid 80's. Overall decent class just do the homework and go to studio and you'll get at least a B. |

Super nice guy, generous grading, and very patient. That's what I got from the two classes I attended this semester. Most of his lectures were recorded when he remembered to press record, and all powerpoints available too. I felt like his TA's and TF's basically taught the class. His homeworks have flexible due dates and his exams were actually kinda tough. |
