Course definitely had a big family science spin on it but overall a good introduction to health policy. You got what you put in. It went until 6 on Tuesday so people are definitely a little tired in class. The papers are graded fairly and both Dr. Anderson and Amanda Ginter, the other teacher, are approachable, helpful and accomodating. I was able to get an extension on one paper because I had a couple exams due on the same day. Class is really chill and the guest speakers are very interesting. Computers are allowed so you can take notes and look up extra information on whatever you're learning about during class. The book is also amazing. There are weekly discussion board questions which you don't have to necessarily read the book to participate in, but I'd suggest reading if you have time since it'll add to your knowledge.

Had her for Federal Semester- Health Policy. One of the nicest and most engaging professors I've had at Maryland. Super energetic about health and very receptive to students' ideas and concerns.

Dr. Anderson was a very approachable professor and this course was really great because it only has about 25 people in it. The book assigned for the class is absolutely great - understandable yet informative. There are also some interesting guest speakers who come in - a nutrition expert from NIH, a maryland state representative, and more. There is also an interesting class trip to D.C. to visit the Capitol (Rep. Hoye'rs office) and meet people working for non-profits and Dept. of Health and Human Services. However, Dr. Anderson focused a lot on family centered health policy, since she is a family science professor. Although we did learn some about health policy, this was not the best introductory health policy course since many of the lectures related to family issues. However, I still enjoyed the class and would recommend it to others - just make sure to do the readings if you really want to learn about all of the aspects of US health policy.
