Lecture slides posted but have to attend because mandatory attendance quiz every class that can only be taken on specific wifi with a code. Lengthy lectures that are unnecessary. Very slow with grades. No feedback on grades. Would not recommend.

The course doesn't have a lot of assignments which is very straightforward. The lecture can drag and she is monotone but I think you get used to it after a while.

Her assignments and grades are incredibly biased, and she is incredibly unempathetic to internet issues while taking her in-class midterms. This would be a good class if taught by anyone else, but she's just not a good professor. She seems like she would be a very nice person, but her teaching abilities are lacking.

This class is very boring, and the professor just reads off off slides. She is constantly trying to push group work, and it's really awkward sometimes when she makes you work with people in the class on random activities when no one is clearly down. She's also very inflexible when you ask for either an extension or more information on an assignment. But it's an easy class and all of the quizzes are online.

She is a monotonous, boring professor who tries to push her views on you instead of teaching the class. Slow grader as well as a harsh grader for a class that should be a guaranteed A+. She grades off of the idea more of if she likes your writing instead of the general overall idea of if your writing fits the rubric and does what you are asked in the prompt. All the tests are in person but through a lockdown browser with around 25 mc and a few short answer that are graded fairly harsh. Does completion assignments in class as well to attempt to get everyone to come to lecture and stay the whole time even when not necessary. Would not recommend if you are not super interested in the topics and instead are taking the class as a gen ed.

I took this class as a GenEd, but also because I am interested in the healthcare field. I recommend steering away from this course if you're not as interested because it's relatively dense (especially the second unit), and the classes are small (awkward and dreadful because she likes group discussions but no one wants to do it which sucks) and she reads off the slides. I personally loved Dr. Ashlock though. She is super sweet and understanding, and her midterms are fairly easy. Major graded assignments are 2 papers and 2 midterms, with weekly quizzes and 'attendance' points. I strongly recommend following the rubric to the T when it comes to the papers, and instead of learning the definitions, learn how to apply them to a sociological aspect. Other than that, I fairly enjoyed my time learning about medicine from a sociological standpoint.

The class itself is fine but she is so boring. You don't even have to show up to class to do good on the midterms because the vocab is posted in elms. Every student is on their phones during the whole class. If you need it for credits or want an easy class its good for that, but wouldn't recommend for anything else

The class is kind of interesting but the professor is so boring and she takes forever to submit grades. She didn't grade a midterm taken at the beginning of November until the week of the final so it's pretty hard to know what grade you'll get. She posts all the slides from class on Canvas and the content is pretty much the same as the textbook. There is little incentive to come to class except now and then she will do a Google form that counts as participation.

She clearly knows what she’s talking about but her skills as a professor end there. She clearly lacks any skills in terms of Technology regularly asking students to complete tasks she herself was unsure how to do which made some projects difficult. Grades are slow…very slow… for having two TA’s they don’t seem to actually do that much with my classes midterms not being released until a week before our final. She’ll drag lectures out for the sake of killing time and akwardly try to convince the class to break out into group discussions when no one wants too or would gain anything from it. She also soap boxes a lot she’ll find a way to turn talking about social strain and find a way to make it about how men are the root of all problems in society or how the university of maryland isn’t doing enough to help *insert minority group of the day*. Also the BS completion assignments did more damage to my grade then the finale, she’ll covertly plan secret completion assignments for her lectures and if your someone who’s a double major or have an active internship you’ll have to miss lecture sometimes and she’ll make a point to drag your grade down because of it.

This unfortunately wouldn't be a class I recommend. The class consists of Dr. Ashlock's reading off of slides and that is about it. Other than the occasional attendance question, there was no point in going since you could just read off the slides later. I will also say everything is very vague in her class. There isn't much of an explanation for what is going on which I found caused me to struggle on exams. Unless you are someone who is naturally just very good at Sociology I can't say I would recommend it.

A little quirky, but overall a kind professor. Takes FOREVER to grade and is very vague on assignments but wants incredible detail without saying it

This class was genuinely one of the most boring classes I have taken at UMD. It is a shame because the content is very interesting, but Dr. Ashlock is not good at conveying the information to the class. First off, her slides are white with black text, often with the information extremely condensed onto each slide. She literally reads verbatim off the slides every single class. Also GO TO CLASS. I made the mistake of missing two classes where she happened to be giving out an in class google form for participation and my grade dropped 10%. Participation is weighted at 13% in that class, which is from the forms given out randomly throughout the semester. However, at least in my experience, she was accommodating and marked them as excused if I emailed her telling her I was sick and unable to attend. This class has two exams and two papers, as well as a short recorded presentation assignment. Exams were doable, provided you review a lot and go over the homework, as she often repeats questions from that. The papers were also somewhat interesting topics so they were not horrible to write. HOWEVER, paper guidelines were extremely unclear, and you think you did everything, but nope! You didn’t provide enough detail despite there being no detailed instructions. She also posts example papers after grades are submitted which I found to be very counterproductive. Dr. Ashlock also grades extremely slowly, which can be very frustrating in knowing your grade. One thing I do have to say is that she is very kind and willing to help whenever you have questions. If paper guidelines are unclear, it is helpful to speak with her to make sure you are on the right track, as she will provide you with help. By going to class and meeting with her to discuss assignments, you should be able to do well in this class.

I don't believe I've ever seen a course take longer to enter assignment grades. The final is tomorrow and I am still unsure of my grades for a large group assignment finished almost 3 weeks ago. The professor uses long-worded answers to questions with cryptic terminology that further confuses students and makes her look like she has no clue what she's talking about.

Honestly, her lectures are very boring and disengaging. The real problem, though, is her vagueness, and every question got a long-winded non-answer in response. The lectures are also a copy and paste of the textbook, which makes the motivation to attend class go down.

Her lectures are informative but she takes a month to upload grades. She also makes paper guidelines unclear and even while answering questions she remains vague. This put a lot of pressure on the students to decipher what she was looking for in an assignment. She also says on her syllabus that missing more than 6 classes will result in an automatic fail, despite professors not being able to grade based on attendance. Overall, she is new to the campus and it shows. Hopefully, once she gets a hang of things she will be less strict.
