This class was very interesting and I would recommend it as an average class in the English dept. The class focused on the role of technology through many interesting books. I enjoyed about half of the books and the assignment load is manageable. If you need a random credit, or course I's say go for it. I was just happy to read Frankenstein... |

This class was not what I expected. It probably should have been titled "Science Fiction and Technology in 19th Century American Literature" instead, and then I never would have taken it. Someone who likes robots and androids would probably enjoy this class more than I did. His focus on technology in each book we read was sometimes a stretch, and the repeated themes definitely got old by the end of the semester. There are online reading quizzes every Sunday night (which makes them easy to forget about), three 2-3 page papers, two 5-7 page papers, and a midterm and final. We read a mix of novels and short stories, some of which were only available online so be prepared to print a lot. Also, he doesn't let you use laptops in lecture, if that matters to you. If you take this class, be prepared to read some pieces of questionable literary value (typos, generally bad writing) because he wanted to emphasize some of the technological/futuristic themes of the course. My TA (Amanda Dykema) was great and I definitely recommend her. Just know what you are signing up for, because I didn't! |

Auerbach is a great professor! His lectures are extremely interesting and he seems really down to earth. But it is a difficult class and involves a lot of reading in a short amount of time. Overall though it is a great class and I would definitely recommend it. |

I really liked Auerbach--had him for a large, lecture class, so I didn't interact with him much one-on-one, but he's brilliant. Assignments weren't too bad (two 5-page papers, a midterm and a final, plus four 2-3 page papers), though the midterm was hard--basically everyone bombed it, but there was an extra credit assignment to make up for some of it. I recommend Auerbach, he was a great professor who provided unusual insight into the texts. |

Avoid this guy at all costs! In all my years as a student I've never met a professor with as little respect for his students' time and lives outside of class. On the first day, not only did he keep us 40 minutes past our scheduled end time (who cares that we might have another class or other obligations that are starting) but he springs on us, totally out of the blue, that we are required to give up 3 hours every Friday night (in addition to our 2.5 scheduled class hours on Thursday) to watch & discuss films with him. My schedule is set months in advance - I teach, take other graduate courses, and work - if you need 2 days to conduct your class then state that up front during registration. How presumptuous of this professor to assume he can pull this kind of sham on adult students! I dropped the course like a rock (as did 4 others). Anyone thinking of taking Auerbach in the future BEWARE! |
