He's the best professor I've had at UMD. I'm an undergrad taking this course and while it was very challenging to do the assignments, the homework and projects do help to do better in the midterm and final. midterm was quite tough and the final was a bit more straightforward but only if you attend his lectures and do the homeworks. he curves quite well at the end so you really wouldn't need to worry about getting anything below a B- unless you didn't do anything in the class. Just try to do median. He's an incredible professor and one of the best UMD had to offer. He was well-prepared for every lecture and covered everything from basic ML to Neural Networks. He also teaches the latest trends in ML towards the end so you get a good foundation with traditional, classical ML with a good flavor of Modern techniques. Take this class with him. Without any hesitation. It will be very complex and difficult road but also very fruitful. |

Also offered as CMSC828C. One of the best courses I ever had. The material is difficult with lot of complex stuff. He covered all necessary background material to make sure everyone is on the same boat. Homeworks and projects were super tough. Exams were doable but had time constraints. But he (and the TA) made everything feel so much lighter. Exams, homeworks and projects were graded leniently, fairly and on time. The best thing about this course is how he teaches in the class. Encourages questioning in class and answers each question to the point it is comfortable to move on. He also provided supplementary material and suggested readings to complement the class. I fully agree with most of the ratings below, he is an ideal professor. Would definitely recommend. |

Pretty much my ideal professor. Good lecturer and has very good people skills. Gives out more work than average but his assignments really push you to learn and are helpful. Exams are hard which once again pushes you to study but after a hard semesters work he hands out final grades that are almost generous to a fault (If you got the lower quartile grade on every assignment in ENEE630 for Fall 2024 you would have an A- for final grade). ENEE630 course content is also really good. Unless your goal is to minimize effort while in graduate school you should take this class. |

He's a wonderful teacher - the lectures are carefully prepared and really interesting, you can tell he's passionate and knowledgeable about the field. He's very nice and always open to questions. Workload and deadlines for the course were always reasonable, and projects are simple and graded leniently. Take him if you get the chance. |

Babadi is one of the best lecturers I've seen during my 5 years at UMD. He comes well-prepared to every class, delivering detailed yet intuitive lectures that allow students of various academic backgrounds to understand the difficult material. Seems ready to answer just about any question you throw at him. Also very punctual over email. His exams are tough but doable if you have a strong grasp of various mathematical fields (statistics, calculus, linear algebra). However, you should be fine if you work hard to understand the homework concepts, and don't skimp on the two projects! |

Very smart professor who is very knowledgeable about the subject matter. Always friendly during lecture, provides clear explanations of the material with easy to understand examples, and covers everything on the exams, homework, and projects in class. However, if you do take ENEE439m, be aware that it is a graduate level course and you will be treated as such. For the projects (which are very fun and interesting btw) you are given a lot of freedom in terms of the implementation of the project, but as a result you are given little guidance. Coming into the class, I had little experience with MATLAB, python, or R and thus struggled in getting started on the projects. Grading in the class is fair, and if you put in effort on the homeworks, get the projects working, and study for exams like any other class, you can expect to get a good grade. Overall, despite having a few difficulties grasping the material (it is challenging stuff), and getting started on the projects, I enjoyed the class and learned a lot. I would fully recommend Prof. Babadi and ENEE439m to anyone interested in machine learning theory and application. |
