PHIL203 Expecting an A- Anonymous 04/26/2024 |
Yunhui is a kind person, but he is by far the worst teaching assistant I've ever had. Dan Blair's PHIL203 class consists of weekly quizzes in the discussion section, which Yunhui leads. He is too shy to speak in front of just 10-15 students, and trails off after every sentence, often being too quiet to even understand. He relies on students to explain the material to him, and it is evident he doesn't know the answers to his own questions. He takes points off on every weekly quiz arbitrarily, and in the comments explains why points were taken off. Yet, in every instance, including students other than myself, the comments are the same, regardless of whether or not the needed information was actually included in the answer. Oftentimes, myself and other students provided the answer that Yunhui requested in his comment, but he still took off a large chunk of the points anyway. It seems he doesn't understand what is going on in the class that he is supposed to be teaching, and he is not qualified to be dictating our grades. As a philosophy grad student, I would've expected him to know more. If you end up in his discussion section, transfer out immediately. |

I'm gonna preface with this the fact that I LOVE Prof Blair and this course, and I totally recommend it. The readings all evoke awesome moral questions and it is not a difficult class if you remain engaged. However, my discussion TA is BEYOND unprepared time and time again each Friday. It is very clear that he does not understand the readings and he does not foster an environment where you can hold meaningful conversations. Furthermore, Yunhui grades your quiz and exam answers at face value, and he often misses the point of what you are saying. He docks points if you do not directly say "X connects to Y because...", or outright say the exact thing he is looking for. |
