ENGL134 Expecting an A- Anonymous 12/05/2024 |
I signed up for ENGL134 for the gen-ed credits. The class is a decent amount of reading, so expect to set aside a few hours every week, but if you stay on top of it it is manageable. The grading scale was extremely unclear. I asked for a syllabus for the essays and was told the professor and TAs just agree on what an A looks like, which didn't explain anything. That being said, take advantage of the optional rough draft you can submit a week before and use the writing center. The participation credit was also vague. Professor Bauer himself clearly knows a lot about the topic, and his lectures feel very well-informed. You can tell he cares about the topic so participate in lecture and he'll like you more. His lectures were a bit all over the place and he kept going back and forth in his slide shows, so at times they were hard to follow. He is also a strict grader. All that being said, by the end of the semester I found the topic of the class really interesting. I'm not a humanities major, so most of the semester I wasn't a fan of the course, but by the end it clicked. If you are looking for a random gen-ed to fill your schedule, this isn't the worst you can pick. |

He is a really nice guy, but his class has far too much reading. Don't take his class if you aren't going to read. I've read barely anything and am really struggling because of it. Its an interesting class but unless you want to sometimes read over 100 pages for a single class don't take this class. |

There is so much reading for this class. I do not recommend it. |

ENGL430 Expecting an A Anonymous 10/21/2011 |
Dr. Bauer is extremely smart and the lectures are very insightful which was surprising since the readings were so long and dry...which brings me into the content of the class. The required reading for each class can be extremely hefty at times. There were a few weeks where the reading was eight hours (I read every single word), no exaggeration. The texts are also very boring narratives; if you like conservative Americans talking about conservative American things then this is definitely your class. Take the class, and you will learn a lot of vocabulary, history and you will adopt a new perspective on reading American texts. |

My rating would be lower but this guy is so incredibly nice. He really knows his stuff. I learned more about history sitting in his literature class than I did in some high school history classes. This was a 400-level class, but I still think he expected too much from us reading wise. They were painfully long at many points during the semester. Over 100 pages a week was not out of the ordinary. The text had really small print too. He will call on you even if you don't raise your hand so try not to go to class unprepared. Every few classes we would have to answer a question and turn it in. It was a class about colonial literature, but it focused too much on Spanish colonization for my tastes. We didn't get to people like Franklin until the last few weeks of the semester. He gave nice leeway on paper due dates. I'd say he's a tough grader too. He required us to argue our points from a rhetoric perspective as opposed to thematic elements. I definitely did not give this class supreme effort and still managed a B. Oh yeah, our mid-term and final were open notes and open book, but they were still intense. He required you to remember a lot of information about a lot of texts and then compare them to one another. |

i thought he was a decent professor but really really boring class. he knows a lot of what hes talking about, is good for answering questions, but unfortunately requires you to go to class because participation is part of your grade (20%!!!) the way they do participation is by making you answer a question near the end of lecture and handing it in. and my TA was pretty bad, i didn't like him at all, he tried to make lame jokes and tried to "scare" us into answering questions during discussion, it was weird. overall didn't really like the class, and there was WAYYYY too much reading!! [atleast 5 books, and that was only during the second half of the semester... one of the books was 700+ pages long] |

I don't like reading at all, but when you come out of this class you learn a lot about history. Bauer is very helpful if you go to his O.H; he is also extremely smart so ask any questions, inc. Qs about the 2 essays and terms regarding the 2 tests. If you read and can write standard essays, you'll do fine; don't read then pay careful attention. |
