Abbie Bennett
JOUR320 Expecting an A Anonymous 11/14/2025 |
Professor Bennett is a fantastic professor for JOUR320. She is a fair grader and always gives amazing feedback. If you are worried about this weed out class she is the person you should take. She makes things digestible and truly believes in you but you do have to put in the work in order to get what you came for. Bennett is always willing to help so ask questions and for guidance that will help you immensely. Keep her in the loop so if your story falls through she can help you pivot quickly. This class is very reliant on your geographic beat and you may have to go off campus for stories but a lot of the work you can do remotely through phone calls or zoom meetings for interviews. So don't be discouraged if you don't get College Park that might actually make life easier as your are not fighting/competing with other 320 students for the same story and the sources might be more willing to speak with you. GET YOUR CLIPS PUBLISHED EARLYYYYY!!!! The thing that will make life so much easier for you is if you get a staff writing position on a campus publication. This will help you get your clips fast and on time and make your writing skills increasingly better throughout the semester. The class portion consists of AP style quizzes, in class writing assignment, and lecture about how to cover certain stories. The AP style quizzes are difficult but try to study beforehand and that will help don't be discouraged if you don't do well, most don't. Bennett is willing to help so let her help you by reaching out first. Take this class even if it is at night, it's more worth it than 8 a.m., and make friends it makes life so much more fun. #Traumabonding |

Abbie is a great instructor for JOUR320! In order to pass this class, you must do six outside assignments based on a geographic beat and get five clips published by verified media outlets over the course of the semester (-3 percentage points from your final grade for every clip you fail to complete). *GET YOUR CLIPS DONE EARLY! THE LAST THING YOU WANT IS TO HAVE THOSE HANGING OVER YOUR HEAD AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER* She knows that it is a super intense class and the "weed out" class for journalism majors at Maryland, so she does everything she can to ease you into the semester so that your major assignments don't feel like they're coming out of nowhere. She's still an active, working journalist so she gives great insight into a day in the life in the industry and treats you more like a co-worker than a student. Obviously, JOUR320 will be difficult and work-heavy no matter who you take it with, that's just the way the course is designed, but Abbie absolutely makes the experience better. |
