If I had to describe him in one word, I would say David Betancourt is passionate. He became a comic book reporter due to a deep love for the medium. He grew up reading comics and was in college by the time comic book movies were coming up. From there he had his dream to write about these stories, his understanding of the topic and what goes into film creation makes him a very good reporter and an even better teacher. His passion about comics and love for the resulting movies is infections, and I'd say he has restored my love for comic book movies. Professor Betancourt passion doesn't just come from the stories, but the diversity present within them as well. An important aspect of some comics come as a result of contemporary (but consistent) themes present in the comics. Many comics were written during the 1960s and as a result had a lot to say about civil rights. X-Men were literally created to represent marginalized communities. Betancourt makes sure you know about these issues that the books tackled and how they've translated to the screen. Oftentimes his articles focus on how important the diversity of these characters is. For him, and many others, being able to see a hero who looks like you is empowering. As a professor he is extremely understanding. There isn't a lot of work but from what there is, he is very flexible and willing to work with you. He wants his students to understand the subject, not feel stressed by it. |
