Dr. Black is the only professor I know to truly master reverse lecture and tie in lecture to a lab well. There are assigned videos for each lecture (range from 30 min to 70 min of content per lecture), just take thorough notes on each video - I used google docs and then screenshotted the photos in the videos to put in my notes. Each class is a discussion on applying the anatomy or games etc. Going to class didn't feel super mandatory except for participation assignments every class, but even without them I would go just because it was fun. She's super nice and understanding and will clear up any questions you have after class or in office hours. She'll get off topic if you berate her with veterinary questions(this means lecture assignments get postponed a week so she can finish the discussion, just don't forget to turn it in later cause she's strict about deadlines). Tests aren't too bad, but come up every 3 weeks. If you commit a few hours for the few nights before an exam(took about 8-10 hours total to master content for 90 averages on exams(70-78 class averages)), nothing out of the ordinary is on them. The best way I studied is to turn her objectives into questions and answer them in your notes and then draw out a mind map of everything. Very much looking forward to taking her again.

Dr. Black is a wonderful teacher and person. She explains things well, can be flexible, and gives very reasonable exams. I gave her 4 only because she is unnecessarily strict about certain things, like turning in lecture assignments. Also, there were lectures when I feel that the time could have been used better. Otherwise, excellent professor.

Dr. Black is probably my favorite professor of all time. If Dr. Black could explain anatomy to me, I am reasonably certain that an Orangutan would perform just as well as me (if not better) in the anatomy lecture. The concept of the LOVs (Learning Objective Videos) combined with her fun discussions of how anatomy relates to functional conditions in class is (unfortunately) many years ahead of its time. This is probably the most effective format for learning any topic, and is taught by (probably) the best instructor that I have ever had. If you are a student taking her course, go up and talk to her about something interesting (animal related) while you have the privilege of doing so. She likes sheep, collies, and primates.

The only professor I would rate a 5. She is hands down my favorite professor. Basically the way her class runs is she assigns videos to watch before each class and you take notes on them at home. She then discusses them/answers any questions/plans activities with the material during class. I LOVED this method because it was on your own time. If you didn't watch the videos, it's not a big deal because she's not strict with Tophat (you can just work with a partner sort of) but you eventually have to watch them. The videos were slow and boring but they were very clear in explaining. Her videos drag because her dogs and cats interrupt the videos a lot, but her explanations are so clear. The videos allow you to take perfect notes because you can just rewind and listen over and over again. During class she plans interactive activities which will be useless to you if you didn't watch the videos beforehand. I strongly strongly suggest you watch them BEFORE the class. It's easy to leave them at the last minute because you'll end up with 20 videos the night before the test. The videos vary between 15-30 min so they're not super long. During class she also talks and tells stories and you'll never ever fall asleep during this class. Her stories and everything about the class is so interesting. Her tests are VERY reasonable. She gives you options on the tests like "Pick 2 out of the 4 to answer" so you don't have to know ALL the material and still do well if you blank out on a section. Everything about this class was SO fair. Her tests are 50 points so if you fail one you can still get an A. She drops one of the tests too. Her tests are short and fair, bordering easy. I wish all my classes were structured this way. I search for classes that she teaches even if I'm not interested in the material because I know she'll make it interesting. I strongly recommend this class to anyone and everyone.

Dr. Black is one of my favorite professors at UMD. She knows a lot about her field and has a lot of experience, which makes for some really interesting stories that helps to make the information more applicable. She is extremely nice and flexible and listens to student concerns. She is very busy so you need to be flexible when making appointments with her but over all great professor.

Dr. Black is a very nice person, and she is very knowledgeable about anatomy, but her tests are somewhat difficult unless you memorize every single word of her lectures and labs, which is difficult to do when you have many other classes to worry about at the same time. She is always willing to help you out, but you need to put forth a significant amount of effort in this class.

Dr. Black is a great professor. She knows her stuff, and is extremely helpful during lectures and lab. I had some qualms about the dissection part of the class, but it turned out to be my favorite part. Its really fun and interesting once you get a hang of how to use the tools like the scalpel and probe. Study really hard for lab quizzes since they make up a significant part of your grade. Learn the locations and repeat the actions to yourself over and over and over again to commit them to memory. You'll find that while it is a lot of hard work to do well, the feeling of achievement in mastering anatomy is priceless! She does NOT curve.

She is a really great teacher - her lectures are very interesting and her tests are straightforward. Even though anatomy is essentially just a lot of memorization, she made the material engaging. She is VERY helpful in the lab. It was my favorite class of the semester.
