I had Dr. Bollmer for my Design, Cultures, and Creativity class on Games and Gameplay, and honestly loved it. The class was new this year and he had a lot of freedom in the curriculum and design, and it ended up being a very enjoyable experience overall. It was a very small class so we got to know him and each other pretty well, and he was always happy to offer support or feedback on projects. My one complaint would be that he doesn't provide very clear instructions for his expectations on assignments. We were required to turn in our class notebooks occasionally, and he wasn't entirely clear on how in-depth he expected the notes or reflections to be. I figured it out through trial and error, based on the grading. Otherwise, very enjoyable class, Dr. Bollmer is approachable and absolutely supportive if you have any thoughts or issues.

I found myself paying attention to maybe 30% of the class, and think Dr. Bollmer could benefit from putting actual definitions on his slides. He explains the concepts he's teaching without giving concrete definitions (maybe because a lot of them are absurdly abstract), so if you don't immediately understand them and can't write down what he says in a way that semi-makes sense then you're kinda screwed.

Professor Bollmer was an OK professor for COMM449N. For a COMM elective, I would recommend taking this course with him. He was a pretty good lecturer and the majority of the class was based on discussion. He did not really use slides and we didn't really need to take any notes. My biggest complaint is that there were no rubrics for anything and grading felt very much based on his opinion. It was hard to know what you were supposed to do since his directions were vague and you could only understand them if you listened to everyone's questions in the class about the assignments. But, overall the class was interesting and not hard. I also wish that Professor Bollmer would have made more of an effort to get to know student names in class with such a small class. What is good is that Professor Bollmer does have a good understanding of the internet, influencers, and social media culture which is not always the case when professors teach about social media. At the start of the semester, we chose an influencer to follow. We followed that influencer for the entire semester and completed 4 primary research assignments where we looked at the content the influencer creates, how the influencer makes money, the influencer's audience, and how they use different platforms. Then, we had a final paper/video focused on bringing together all of that research and making an argument. This is an overview of what you can expect!
