CCJS300 Expecting a B+ Anonymous 12/03/2023 |
Honestly, the only reason I have a B is because I did not do well on the first exam. Exams consist of 2/3 lecture and 1/3 textbook. Do NOT neglect the textbook section! There are 6 research projects throughout the year but they are not difficult or time consuming. There is also an extra credit assignment at the end of the semester. Professor Brooks is extremely helpful and I wish to take more of her classes. She is a great speaker and easy to pay attention too. Lecture content is not too heavy either! |

Dr Brooks is a really good and straightforward professor. If you go to the lectures, read the chapters, write like 2 sentences for the discussions posts, and review your notes before the exams, you can get an A (or even if you just do quizlets other people made a few times you should be good). I'm not going to get that because I was lazy and didn't really study but she also gives a 10 point extra credit opportunity by doing a police ride along and writing a short essay. Take her class |

Professor Brooks is an amazing lecturer. I love the way she gives notes- outline style. She explains everything perfectly and doesn't leave much room for questions because she covers everything. She has research projects for this class and they aren't hard, you can go to her during her office hours and she will look at them. They're honestly an easy way to boost your grade. Her classes are very exam heavy though. There are 3 exams with 50 questions (multiple choice & true/false), and they make up the majority of your grade even with the research projects. I also had her for CCJS340 and it was the exact same, but we had weekly discussion posts and they counted even less towards your grade, so exams are very important. I would take her for all of my classes if I could! |

Professor Brooks is a very good lecturer and keeps a good pace of time between assignments and exams. She is always available if you have any questions or need help. If you are a student who is organized and will read the textbook, you will do great in the class. |

Such a great professor. I had her for both 300 & 340 and both went well. Dr. Brooks is extremely organized and very clear about assignments/exams. Exams do involve a lot of memorization of class concepts, and some textbook material, but it's all very straightforward. If you take notes in class and do the textbook review guides for 340, there's no reason you shouldn't get an A. Also a lot of great guest speakers in 340, so if you're interested in police work, you have a ton of opportunities to network. |

Dr. Brooks rocks. Super organized, engaging, and adds just the right amount of humor to keep class fun. You will do well in this class, and Dr. Brooks makes sure of that by taking care of her students through office hours and in-class Q&A. Yes, her CCJS300 sections are MWF and I’m not a fan of Friday classes either. But if I had to have class Saturday and Sunday just to have Dr. Brooks as my professor, I would. Seriously, she’s that good. |

I had Dr. Brooks for 300 and 340 this semester. I cannot say enough good things about her. She is the best professor I have had at UMD so far. She wants all of her students to succeed. She holds office hours and offers help on the research assignments, so there really is no excuse not to get 100 on them. If you go to class, take the notes, and read the textbook, you should get an A in both 300 and 340. She also offers extra credit, and is very fair with grading. There are no surprises on her exams - everything that she tells you is on it, will be on it. She keeps even the boring material interesting in class. The guest speakers in 340 are very interesting, and so is the other material she teaches. I really recommend you take 300 and 340 with Dr. Brooks if you want to get an A and have a professor that genuinely cares for her students and respects them. |

Dr. Brooks is one of the best professors I've had! She is very organized and this is the second semester I'm taking one of her classes. She posts all the lectures for an exam ahead of time so you can go ahead if you want, and also you can send her your assignments ahead of time so you can get feedback before the deadline. She is very responsive and cares for her students, so I recommend taking her for every class you can! |

I had her for CCJS300 and CCJS340 and loved her! She makes her notes easy to follow and tells you which sections from the readings will be on exams. She makes an effort to get to know and help her students. I definitely recommend taking her class |

I had Dr. Brooks for CCJS 300 and CCJS 340. She is one of the best professors I had here at UMD. Her teaching model should be a blueprint. Her tests contain no tricks. She tells you exactly what sections to go over in the book so you don't read the entire chapter. The rest of the test comes from the clear lecture notes that she presents. She's nice, straightforward, and she cares about her students. I highly recommend. |

Dr. Brooks is amazing! She is one of the best professors I have had at UMD. Her class is very straightforward, and the exams require maybe 2 hours of studying if you attend lecture regularly. She offers extra credit and grades very fairly. I had her for 300 and 340 concurrently, and she was wonderful for both. |

Excellent professor, I found lectures pretty interesting and on topic. You need to go to class to do well and easy extra credit quizzes. The tests are easy especially if you go to class. |

Dr. Brooks is INCREDIBLE. I had the pleasure of taking two classes with her (CCJS340 and CCJS300) in one semester and I LOVED it. Her exams are very straightforward--they are based right off the notes and the few readings (if you wait until right before an exam to read the textbook, you'll be done within a few hours). For CCJS300, there really isn't an excuse to not get an A. The computer assignments boost your grade significantly AND you can take them to her before she grades them to make sure it's correct. For CCJS340, Dr. Brooks makes the material very easy to understand and gives the best notes! Also, there are 5 extra credit points you can get off the quizzes and another extra 5 points you can get from a ride-along. Overall, she is OUTSTANDING. I only wish she taught more CCJS classes! |

Professor Brooks is semi-interesting. Some days I can really pay attention, but others I fall asleep. The guest speakers are really interesting and I like that she offers a ride-along as extra credit. However, I think there should be some kind of assignment besides the exams and attendance to contribute to the final grade. I got an A on the first exam and a C+ on the second one, so even though I did the extra credit and barely missed any classes, I might get a B which is frustrating. I also had her for CCJ300, which was a lot better because there are four computer assignments which really boost your grade. |

Very easy class, but you do HAVE to go to the lectures - there are open note quizzes at the end of every lecture, but they're also very easy and help to pad your grade. Notes are done in an outline format and tests are very easy. She outlines exactly what you need to know from the textbook readings, so don't bother reading the whole sections unless they really interest you. There are five extra credit points awarded if you are in class the entire semester and take the extra quizzes (she gives thirty and only counts twenty five towards your grade). There are also five extra credit points given for going on a ride-along. We had six guest speakers this semester and they were all varied and interesting! SWAT, death investigations, K-9, Undercover, Guns and Hostage Negotiation. Dr. Brooks is also very approachable and willing to help out any students. She tells a lot of stories that really help the material stick in your head. She takes what sounds like a boring class and makes it very entertaining! |

Dr. Brooks is thee most amazing professor ever! She give the best notes, they are easy to take and easy to study. Tests are pretty easy, as long as you go to class. The readings are not hard either, they have to do with what your learning in class and she tells you what part of the book you will be tested on. AND! she gives a bunch of extra credit! This helps ALOT! if you have a B in the class it can bring you up to an A! She has open book extra credit quizes that are worth 1 point each, and there are 10 quizes in all. And a 2 page ride along paper which is worth 5 points. She has a bunch of quest speakers that come in who are supposed to be pretty good also. I took the class in the winter so we didnt have them. Crim majors will greatly enjoy this class. Its easy and you actuallyy learn! Btw, I got a 97% in the class! |

Professor Brooks was GREAT!! She gives like 10 extra credit quizzes which can be really helpful...They helped me get a B instead of a C...I missed the first 3 and after I realized we had them, I never missed another one because I never knew when they were coming, but knew I needed the extra grade boost! She keeps the class interesting and fun, knows how to keep us engaged. Her notes are very thorough and organized which helped me A LOT! I'd take her class again if I had the opportunity |

There is one thing she does that MAY at first annoy you, but TRUST ME on this, it will help A LOT. There are open-note quizzes during class (once a week, I think) that are short that REALLY help keep the knowledge fresh in your head, give you an easy padding on your grade, and force you to keep taking notes. The way she structures her notes is also commendable because it makes it SO much easier to study later. She numbers and sub-headers everything. And each section is divided VERY clearly. Additionally, she gives EXTREMELY helpful review sheets that give exact page ranges of reading that will be assessed on the exam from the book. This makes studying 200 times easier. This way, you learn a lot and never feel pressured to over-study in case the teacher sneaks something onto the exam. She is very meticulous and specific about what you will be assessed on. Overall, she is very upbeat, has a great personality, covers the material very clearly and effectively, and makes it easy to pay attention and take good notes. |
