Busse is a very nice person, but he is not a good professor. He speaks extremely fast. I talk fast, but he speaks extremely fast and doesn't finish his sentences. He jumps from topic to topic mid-sentence 90% of the time. He will start a sentence talking about how to solve probability and halfway through begin talking about labor statistics. If you have a strong statistics background, this is fine. As someone who forgot most of the basic statistics, the lectures are hard to follow. He doesn't use slides, instead he has a document on the screen that outlines what we do in class. They aren't super helpful. He also gives you so many real life examples that you don't walk away understanding the statistical concepts required for the class. Here are the good things about Busse. He cares about his students and if you come to class, he will try to help you. Tests are take-home, and homework once a week. The class is not hard and Busse designs it to help people succeed. He is a really nice person who loves statistics. He will work with you to get you where you need to be. I appreciate him for how hard he tries and that he cares about the people who want to learn. He also loves real life examples, so you'll gain knowledge about all sorts of policy (and non-policy) statistics. Although, even when you ask for help, he still talks fast and jumps sentences -- you just need to keep asking pointed questions to get the answers you need. If I did not have to take this class, I would drop it. The whole class seems confused and Busse can't resolve the confusion because he cannot slow down or stop himself from jumping around. While he is a nice person and the class is easy, you have to spend some time trying to understand what is happening. |

Great professor who genuinely wants the best for his students. As long as you show up to class and put in effort, you will be fine. He does talk fast but if you are engaged the material comes with time. The exams are also not too hard as long as you know how to apply the concepts. Overall, he is very knowledgeable and if you show up to class you will find something that interests you. |

Great professor who genuinely cares about his students. As long as you attend class and actively engage with the material, you'll do well. |

Dr. Busse is an interesting teacher. He's brilliant, you can't deny it. You actually will learn a lot more from him than you might think you do. I found that just copying what he writes on the board verbatim helps a lot because trying to follow along with what he's saying can be difficult due to how fast he speaks and how quiet he can be sometimes. He also cares a lot about attendance. He said he didn't when I took PLCY304, but everyone who came everyday or even just most of the time wound up getting their grade boosted and he brought in baked goods for us at the end of the class(which were actually pretty good). Essentially, what you put into the class is what you get out of it. You don't have to come, or at least you didn't when I took it, but coming regularly helped a lot and wound up getting me an A that I wasn't counting on getting. Also, the TA was really good when it came to helping us understand concepts (Miranda if you ever read this, you're a lifesaver). |
