I found the lectures a bit confusing, but no one communicates passion for science like Dr. Buxboim. He's a very kind and understanding professor, he made a positive & welcoming environment and encouraged student questions. |

As mentioned below BIOE232 Spring 2025 was Professor Buxboim's first time teaching at UMD and furthermore in the United States. With that being said, there were some obvious discrepancies that stemmed from this. 1.) There is a very slight language barrier, I personally never had trouble understanding him but he can have quick moments of difficulty trying to convey a point in English. 2.) As mentioned he had no familiarity with Canvas so the course did not run as smoothly as other professors in the department but I would expect to see improvement from him here in the future. He is a good teacher and if he continues to teach this course I foresee great improvements on his end if he takes the hiccups from this semester and course feedback and learns from it. |

PROS: This guy is really passionate about thermo. The subject itself is pretty boring but he makes it as engaging as he can. His first two midterms (and most of the final) were almost exactly like the homeworks that were assigned, the averages were in the high 80s for both (final has not been graded yet). No trick questions, if you know how to do the homework you should get at least 85% right on the exam. He also offers bonus points on the midterms and final. The ethics project was very simple and straightforward and he graded very leniently. He loves to talk to students and will spend time with you in office hours and after class explaining concepts and learning about you. CONS: Given the fact that this is his first American class he has been doing great job but he still has some shortcomings. First, he was not trained to use canvas which would often mess up the deadlines of assignments. Also, large grades were often not released until two weeks after the exam and the grading of exams were unclear. Our final has still not been graded even though it has now been one week since we have taken it. The final exam was more challenging than the midterms, but the problems were still fair. Some of his lectures were also unorganized, as it can feel like hes reading off of his own slides for the first time. Overall, Prof Buxboim is doing a great job at his first American class. There are still some kinks for him to iron out (especially with organization and communication) but he does make learning thermo fairly interesting and his exams are also very fair. He is pretty charismatic, not afraid of criticism, and loves when students ask questions. If you study the homework and look over his slides you will do fine without attending class, but attending class is a great way to learn why thermo is something to be passionate about. |

The teacher made students feel intimidated when asking questions and often did not understand what we were saying. He occasionally displayed a negative attitude towards students and was overly particular with his grading method, despite this being his first UMD class. Also, he did not take student feedback seriously and rarely responded to emails. |
