I have always loved history. My grandfather was an archeologist and I was a tour guide on the underground railroad in high school. I mean this with full offense possible, Sarah Cameron is the single worst history teacher I have ever had. I don't normally leave reviews but I needed to warn people. She never gives out rubrics so you never know how it will be graded. She only grades right if you follow exactly in line with her every thought. No opinions are allowed here guys. Not even facts to be fair. On our final project, she demanded we not use outside info and only use articles from a list of three places. ONE OF WHICH BEING RADIO FREE EUROPE. That is wild to me if she thinks that is one of the four most credible sources of information about Eastern Europe. She assigns so much reading that isn't even valuable or used. If none of this convinces you that you should take a different class I will tell you one last thing. In class, we were having a discussion about a nation tearing down both Nazi and Soviet statues and why the populace was upset. She regularly said that they were essentially equal in their atrocity...WHAT! When a student said and I quote "The Nazis were great generals so they deserve statues" she didn't push back at all, she sat there nodding her head yes. Sarah Cameron is an utter disappointment. |

HIST442 with Sarah Cameron is a very solid class. This is as much a review for the class as it is the professor, but it's hard to judge one and not the other. Anyways, it's pretty standard for an upper level history class. Midterm, final, and paper are the main assignments. Everyone has to give a brief presentation on one of the primary sources, and there are weekly quizzes based on the readings. The quizzes felt kind of pointless to me, but they're less work than discussion board posts, so whatever. Sometimes the questions were kind of obscure, but the lowest quiz grade gets dropped. And aside from the presentation, there's no participation grades, so that's nice. As far as the amount of reading each week goes, it was pretty reasonable. I've had classes with less reading, and I've had classes with more. I couldn't estimate the average number of pages each week, nor how long it took me to do the readings each week. But you could do worse than this class. The only thing I will say is that the paper for this class requires you to choose a book to read, they're all somewhere in the 100-200 page range. I don't recall this being mentioned on the syllabus, so it did feel like there was a bit of extra reading being dumped on me that I wasn't expecting. Overall, if you're just looking for a straightforward upper level history class to take (maybe you're like me and it's both your minor and upper level concentration for the CS major), this is a good choice. The thing I have the most praise for is Dr. Cameron's lectures. Both the lectures and accompanying powerpoints were fantastic. Because of that, you can definitely walk out of this class having learned something new, on top of it having a very reasonable workload. |
