Expecting a B

Great guy, but has zero time management skills. He'll spend about 75% of class time over explaining one point, so you'll only ever get through about 40% of his prepared slides on a good day. You're gunna be expected to read about 100 pages of textbook material a week, plus 20-40 pages from academic journals, both of which are on the dry side. He's also a pretty harsh grader. Overall it's a lot of work for a gen-ed. I wouldn't take it again or recommend it to anyone, and this was the class I was most excited for this semester. The only upside is he gave us a good study guide from the mid-term (and hopefully finals).

Expecting an A

He is very knowledgeable about the topics that he teaches. I definitely learnt a lot about the European takeover of South America. There is a lot of readings, but as long as you stick to the syllabus, you should do fine. Recommend if you enjoy history and don't mind a lot of reading, but if you are looking for an easy A, this class is not it.

Professor Caneque seems to forget that this is a lower level history course. The amount of information gone over during class is absurd, can't imagine doing the reading too. He grades pretty harshly, very few A's, mostly C's. He's almost always in a bad mood. Don't be tricked by his GPA on here, its mostly from upper level and graduate classes anyway. If you're looking for an easy diversity requirement, do not take this. If you're looking for an interesting history course that is going to require an absurdly disproportionate amount of time for what it should be, sure go ahead and enjoy. I would rate this a 2.5 if I could, but I rounded up to 3. Knowing what I know now, I would not have taken this course. And I am a history major.
