I had Prof. Chaplin for AMST 200 which is American Studies of the Everyday Life. First and foremost, I would avoid this woman for multiple reasons. The first few weeks, you'll start to notice she picks favorites from among the class. She will tend to alienate everyone else soon afterwards with how she treats people, vs how she treats her favorite(s). For this class, her tests tended to be on obscure aspects of the (very dry) reading material. She does give study guides, but they're only somewhat helpful. We had a few in class presentation days about various aspects of American culture where we talked about things in our own lives or on a specific topic, but she does not give out a rubric on what she's looking for and grades arbitrarily because of it. She takes attendance every class, but has no problem cancelling class the morning of (via email, sometimes no more than an hour beforehand if you get an email at all). She loses her train of thought quite often, and just stands there staring blankly at you for a good ten seconds sometimes. This whole class gets VERY depressing as the semester rolls on very quickly. I had to drag myself there some mornings just so she wont ***** about low attendance for the first 10 minutes. If you decide to take her anyways, good luck and godspeed. As the other person said, she's nice... mostly. I'd describe it as more 'polite' personally. But that's just me.

She's a nice lady, the course material was kind of boring though. I liked US history in high school and thought this class was gonna be a similar, more interesting variation. It wasn't though. The articles are weird and are not very fun reads. She herself is nice though, and doesn't grade harshly. We had weekly writing assignments instead of coming to class on Fridays, sweet deal.
