Dr. Chopra is a nice guy, but it's pretty clear that he rarely teaches undergrads. The lectures were all over the place and I never felt that I had a concrete understanding core concepts until relatively late in the class. The class started offering tutoring about halfway through the semester, and the grad students who taught those tutoring sessions (along with some concept explanation videos I found on YouTube) were what got me through this course. Overall, I think a lot of the issues from this class stem from the fact that it has never been run before and I think many of the issues with the course (disorganized lectures, unmotivated labs, very long/confusing homeworks) will get ironed out in the future, and I appreciate that Dr. Chopra took the last class to have a discussion about how the course could be improved. |

Interesting class. Lectures were kind of jumbled but considering this was the first time this class was taught I thought he did a very good job. Very nice guy. He seems to care about his students. We spent the last class just talking about how he could improve the course because he wants what is best for his students. |

Class is not terribly tough, but understanding the professor is tough. I ended up having to rely on online lecture recordings of the other professor teach at the time. This class could be much easier with a better professor. Grading is tough also, with no partial credit possible on the exams. |

This class is quite intellectually challenging. I strongly advise against taking this course as an entry-level graduate student without having a thorough knowledge of robotic and control systems concepts as well as a good knowledge of linear algebra. While Prof. Chopra puts effort to help students understand the material, the lecture sometimes seem to be scattered; most of the time, what he says is as important or more important that what he writes, and so you miss a lot of stuff if you're just copying, or just listening. Also it would be helpful if the lectures were properly outlined, as you can be in class for a week and not know what is actually going on, despite your keen attention. He also tends to assume a great deal of prior knowledge, and terms/equations keep flying on the board with few people -if any- understanding what they mean. You should also be very comfortable with Matlab and Simulink since you will use it in the homeworks without being walked through in class. Expect to spend 15-20 hours on homeworks easily. Overall Dr. Chopra is a nice professor, but his classes are generally difficult. |
