I think Cui is an amazing professor. I took ARTH201 for a gen ed requirement, but history is not my favorite subject at all so learning some of the content was tedious. However, I still came out of this course with a deeper appreciation for artworks and art history. He talks for the entire lecture, but you can tell he is definitely passionate about art history. I really like he wants his students to analyze art and value originality instead of only focusing on memorizing artworks' titles and artists (though you may need to memorize for the midterm and final exam). The information and skills I learned from his class were meaningful, especially when I went to the National Gallery of Art in DC and applied what I learned in class. You can also tell he really cares about his students. For our final essay, we had to do essay consultations. I requested to do the consultation at the National Gallery (which he gave the option to do so) and he made the effort to show up and provided extra resources to help me write my essay, which I think is a testament to his dedication and thoughtfulness.

ARTH201 with Cui is the best class I have ever taken. He makes each lecture so interesting and you can tell that he is so passionate about the subject and cares so much about his students. He is always making fun references to movies and pop-culture that make Renaissance and other art fun and easy to understand. He is always available to help you and give feedback and was so understanding and fair with the grading of every assignment. There were readings and pre-lecture assignments for each class, but they were straightforward and fun. He is very open to originality and hearing your opinion both in class and for assignments. As long as you think about the topics creatively you will get a good grade, for most art there isn't a wrong answer. Even if you are not interested in Art History I would take this class just to gain an understanding of art and how it has shaped the Western World and to have a class with him as your professor.

I had Cui for ARTH201 during the fall semester, and I genuinely really enjoyed his classes and teachings. You can tell he really enjoys what he does, and he's very knowledgeable on the topics and clearly conveys the information to the class. Theres only 2 exams in the semester, and he gives plentiful resources and study tools to help you succeed. Overall, he's a really nice and understanding teacher, so I really recommend taking one of his classes.

I had Cui for ARTH200 over the winter semester, and I highly recommend it if you find the topic interesting and are a strong writer. His lectures are a bit stale, but that's par for the topic. His first language isn't English, so he talks a bit slower but speaks very clearly. He is very understanding about assignments and will work with you if you need extra time. He wants you to do well and gives very constructive and encouraging feedback. If you are not a passionate writer or philosophical thinker, maybe avoid taking this class, as that is the bread and butter of the course. You can tell Cui is very passionate, well-read, and excited about the topic and is a thorough lecturer. I came out of this intensive course understanding the world through art and being able to identify origin countries and eras-- very cool skills to use, especially when walking around DC or even campus. Highly recommend Cui.

I really enjoy Professor Cui. I've had him for ARTH200 and ARTH330, and both classes were very doable and engaging. His assignments aren't difficult, mostly short papers (2-6 pages), and maybe a quiz here or there, but they're all very simplistic and easy to structure. All of the classes I've taken of his were virtual, and although his prerecorded lectures can get a little dull, you don't have to take extremely detailed notes on each one to get a good grade. His essay structure was a little annoying, releasing each essay topic the day before it was due, but he is very accommodating and will give extra time if needed. He loves interacting with students and is very passionate about the topics he discusses. Would for sure recommend to anyone in the ARTH program!
