This class, as well as Mario himself, was pretty tough and if I'm being honest, pretty disorganized and lazy. I am also writing this before the final, and I've yet to know if this class will be curved or not. Mario himself is a nice guy, and he definitely knows his stuff, but him as a teacher... I'm not sure I can say good things about. Firstly, Mario grades everything himself, which in theory doesn't sound all that bad. But he only shows up to lab for like the first 5 minutes and then he will either dip or harp on the TA (which the TA was goated btw shoutout). This means that he has no idea of what equipment is malfunctioning, broken, etc. Not only this, but he's the type to grade on how well the experimental data matches with the theoretical data to a VERY accurate degree (I think he just has a solution manual of what the data should look like and he refers to these when grading these reports. Why do you have a solution manual for lab reports?), so if your data even has the slightest of errors or inconsistencies, expect massive deductions Prelabs can also be pretty time consuming, and often times will need extra resources outside of class notes to complete. Mario is also a tough grader when it comes to these prelabs. There are 2 exams for this course, and he allows a cheat sheet for them. They were pretty tough, and in combination with his tough grading, it can be pretty devastating. He takes attendance at the beginning of lecture and it counts towards 10% of your final grade. The lectures themselves can be a bit boring as he basically just reads off a slide. Finally, he is an absolute old fella. He does not know how to use Canvas one bit, and will grade everything in waves (Our first wave of grading was I think the week before Halloween, and the second wave of grading was right after Thanksgiving break). He prints out the lab reports and prelabs and gives minimal feedback and annotations on them (Averages for both prelabs and postlab reports range anywhere from 40-85%). He is also pretty stubborn when it comes to regrading, and will often times omit emails regarding regrading. There was a moment in the semester that the prelabs and postlab reports were submitted in the same submission box (under 2 attempts) and he didn't know how to get the prelab submission on canvas. He ended up mass emailing all of us at like 1:30 in the morning asking for our prelab reports. Love that. It's really hard to recommend taking this class with Dagenais. For a 2 credit lab, it is deceptively time consuming and stressful. |

This professor is incredibly intelligent and knows his stuff. Can tell he is passionate about the course content. Lectures slides were often straightforward from powerpoint (and the texbook), but were quite lengthy (a lot of information to absorb and remember). Homework was mostly from the textbook and not too strenuous. You are allowed to have personal notes on exams, but he is a pretty tough grader (exam averages in the 60s). Overall, the course was manageable, fairly interesting, and not too busy for a 6xx course. |
