I had Professor Daschle in the spring 2025 semester and he easily became one of my favorite professors I’ve had. Originally I was a bit scared of taking professional writing and in particular, technical writing. All my expectations were definitely surpassed. Participation and attendance are HEAVILY important for the class. Alone, it is a small percentage of your grade but the in-class activities are really important for getting a base understanding of the material. This develops into actually completing the bigger assignments, giving you a head start on how to do the assignment, or already starting it from the in-class activities. All of the big assignments are really not that hard with a bit of work put into it, but professor Daschle is extremely helpful and quick in answering questions to help you, whether in-class or via email. As long as you don’t wait until the night before to do the bigger assignments, the workload is very reasonable and fair. His lectures are important, and he clearly knows what is talking about and is able to convey those messages easily. Especially for the type of material he covers, his teaching style keeps you engaged especially with the constant small activities throughout. But it is really easy to feel a part of the actual lecture and participate even if you are not used to it. The last thing I’ll add is that he wants you to be comfortable and can be flexible if you talk to him about assignments. If there are things you are really passionate about or want to try, he will definitely let you. There were times that my topic didn’t necessarily fit perfectly in the boundaries of the assignment, but he was more than happy to let you try to find a way to make it work AND even give you recommendations of how you could go about it or what to target. I really don’t have any negatives, but for english and particularly ENGL393, Professor Daschle should easily be at the top of your list, you will not be disappointed. |

Professor Daschle is a really nice guy; he's pretty soft-spoken but he definitely knows what he's talking about. I can't really say I learned much taking this course, and the essays were SOOOO long, but that's the same with any other english class. If you attend class most days, and participate occasionally in class, you'll probably get an A. I really liked him as a professor actually, because I felt like he could actually push the class intellectually if he wanted to, but he recognized that nobody really cared about the class since it's just a gen-ed. That being said, I am excited to take Professional Writing with him because I feel like he did get to know students fairly well and cared about our class (as in not overwhelming our mental capacity). He also was very accommodating with an extension or two if you were really in a pickle. I highly recommend him. |

He’s alright but no one cares about ENGL101 so the lectures are so boring and almost never related to what we’re working on. I feel bad because he’ll ask a question and no one answers him or does in the in-class work but he makes the 50 minutes drone on. But the grading is easy and he stays on top of assignments and deadlines (gives plenty of time) unlike some other English professors I’ve heard about. |

You'll probably get an A and he's a really nice guy, but he honestly taught me nothing and doesn't give great feedback. |

PLEASE take a class with Professor Daschle! I had him for a Writer's House fantasy and sci-fi writing class, and it was my favorite class I've taken at UMD. He is so kind and knowledgable, and he submits grades and critiques very quickly - additionally, his comments on stories are always really insightful and helpful! The classroom environment was always very happy and lighthearted, mostly due to how relaxed and kind he is. Additionally, he has great reading recommendations! You can tell how much he loves creative writing and that he takes his work as a professor really seriously! He's just generally a great person. I was always really excited to come to class - I highly recommend taking a course with him! |

Expect to read some of the best stories ever written in Professor Daschle’s class. He has great taste in books and stories, and the assigned readings are always super fun to read, and are very diverse in their authors and narrative styles. Definitely take this class if you’re a reader. The actual meat of it: This class is an easy A: everything is graded on completion, not quality, and the Professor is flexible on deadlines if asked. You’ll have an about 400 words to write each week: a response to a 5-6 page story or essay that will be the assigned reading (these are insanely fun to read). There will be 2 workshop stories you’ll have to write: 5-10 page original works that you’ll revise at the end of the semester for your final grade (this class doesn’t have a final). There will also be in class discussions on your and your classmates’ stories to help you improve. The easiest way to lose points is attendance: you MUST show up to these discussions every week. There’s one discussion, one lecture, not intense at all. Mostly just a chat over writing with people who love stories. The Bottom Line: don’t take this class if you don’t read or write or don’t enjoy stories in your spare time. If you do, DEFINITELY don’t miss this one. |

Easy A course if you complete the assignments and show up to the 2 classes in a week. Professor Daschle is a pretty chill guy, a fun lecturer and really makes everyone feel included: he's pretty young too so relatable overall. Drops movie/ book references left and right which is pretty fun. Also a really fair grader: weekly assignments are graded on completion and not quality, and Professor Daschle always has something nice and helpful to say about your writing. The Actual Course Breakdown: Expect to have to read a 2-5 page story or essay each week and have to respond to it in about 500 words. Easy stuff, Professor Daschle has great taste in stories and they are definitely something that you might read in your spare time: they don't feel like class readings at all. Responses are graded on completion, not quality. The easiest way to lose a grade would be participation: there will be a total of 2 longer 5-10 page Workshop Stories you'll have to write, and "workshops" on your/ your classmates' stories every week where you show up to give feedback on the story that's being workshopped. SHOW UP TO THESE DISCUSSIONS for the participation grade. Definitely would take this class again. Perfect for both people looking to get into writing more seriously and beginners who just want the DSSP credit. |
