I don’t understand why there aren't more five-star reviews for this class. When I first read these reviews, I was worried and considered switching sections. However, there were no other classes that fit my schedule. I was completely mistaken. I took Dr. Deinert's English 101 class and was very satisfied with the overall outcome. I've heard horror stories from some of my peers about other ENGL 101 instructors, but Dr. Deinert clearly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He effectively explains what you need to do in order to write well and earn a good grade. While his lectures can be a bit dull, the material and class structure are determined by UMD, not him. At the end of the day, this is a college-level class, and your writing needs to be of a certain quality. As long as you put careful thought into your pieces, you will earn a great grade and feel happy you took his class. I highly recommend it to all incoming freshmen or anyone else needing to fulfill the 101 credit. Dr. D is fantastic! |

ENGL101A Expecting an A- Anonymous 12/04/2024 |
I expected this class to be a breeze because I took IB and AP classes in high school. Even though he is an overall easygoing teacher, I found his tone while teaching to be condescending and passive-aggressive. He teaches mainly through a textbook, which is extremely boring. The course is based on a few major papers, which pretty much determine your grade. I expected this going in. However, I still have not received a grade for things I submitted a month ago. In comparison to my peers who are taking this course, I feel I have had to work much harder and put in more effort to get barely a B on papers. His grading can be fairly harsh, and it is difficult to understand why you received that grade. Our attendance was graded in the sense that he would have us do in-class writings with our names on them. If you miss these, they do severely impact your grade, so be careful! Overall, he is an okay professor, but if I could, I would recommend someone else. |

ENGL101S Expecting an A- Anonymous 01/21/2024 |
An overall easy-going professor. Yes, he is new to the teaching gig but tries to make every class useful to his students. However, that is where the positivity ends. He has yet to figure out the pace of the class, so everything seemed rushed to the last minute. The position paper, something that should be a major research project, was only given a week to be done. I had to pull two all-nighters just to get all of my sources and the 8-10 pages done (which in some classes only required 6 pages!). We also had to do the memo project when others just had to complete an outline. His grading was pretty harsh at the beginning, too. Every one little detail on a paper that he did not like he took off points, even if it was exactly what the rubric asked. I would constantly get Cs just because he did not like my topic, despite him approving it just a class earlier. However, I clutched up towards the end of the semester, so thankfully I didn't have a massive GPA drop in a supposedly introductory writing class. If you want to have this professor in the future, be prepared to sink at least 30-40 hours a week writing essays and going to office hours hoping that he would like whatever it is that you wrote. |

Professor Deinert is great; he's nice, always responds to emails quickly, and is available for office hours. The class may be dull at some times, but he really tries to keep everyone engaged with ungraded group activities. He will help you revise essays to get a good score no matter what shape they are in. As long as you are willing to put in the work for his class (which is not a significant amount of work), you will do well. |

ENGL101 Expecting a B Anonymous 12/21/2023 |
Not a terrible professor when teaching the material, however he grades way harsher than any other professor I’ve found for English 101. Easily sunk the majority of my time into this class despite it being not in my major, and still barely pulled out a B while friends of mine in other sections got A+ with minimal effort. |

New professor, lectures were boring and nearly fell asleep every class. Gave us very little time between each assignment let alone time to do the papers themselves and everything seemed rushed. He wouldn’t even bump my grade from a 93.55 to a 94, which is critical for gpa |

Loves to hear himself talk. Lectures were long and repetitive. Graded assignments did not have clear instructions which led to low grades. |
