bros the goat, easy class. easy A. thank god I took him. if he keeps this up, he's the obvious choice for 401. it's a basic requirement anyway, so the shortfalls of his class don't really matter. take Anurag, keep your sanity.

Easiest A of my life, but also the most frustratingly pointless class I have ever taken. Do not take Anurag Dey, especially for a course you want to use as a prerequisite for future courses.

I have mixed feelings on this. The class started out fairly normally, and although he probably cancelled about one in five classes (and was often about 10-15 minutes late to the ones he attended), there wasn't much to write home about. The first midterm was very easy, which everyone was excited about. After that, the wheels fell off. He went from cancelling class once every other week to showing up once every other week. He suggested he was going through some health problems, which I do understand, but he still had obligations to us. About 3 weeks after the midterm, we were getting set to take our second midterm, and he dropped a bombshell on us: He was completely changing the structure of the class. There would be no midterm 2, there would be no new instruction, no more homework, basically, no future assignments.. Instead the class was split into 6 groups with a vague assignment which basically amounted to "Work with your group on some sort of Statistics thing". Nothing would be turned in, and each group would meet with him to discuss every third lecture. He was still no-showing around 75% of the time. No group really did much with this. Nothing was turned in, and our professor was very rarely even there to discuss our research with. Several times people reported going to his classroom during class times and no one being there, no students, no Professor Dey. He pretty much didn't even announce it anymore. Long-story short, he really didn't teach for the 2nd half of the semester. The Mid-term and final were both easy (directly off the homework), and the cutoff for an A was 85%. Most students will get an A, which is nice, I suppose. But as a professor, he simply did not really do his job.

He does not teach, so it's a waste of your tuition money to choose him (especially if you need this course as a prerequisite). He barely got past STAT400 content before he decided to stop lecturing and give us a "group project" to work on, which was just an excuse for him to skip the scheduled lecture time more than he already did. Have not gone to that class more than once a week since the middle of the semester.

good teacher, while he cancels a lot of class, i think its because he genuinely isn't feeling well, the class isn't very hard and i think most people are doing fine, i honestly didnt go to class at all, and was able to self study right before the test, also for those who care, i think the material he teaches is interesting, i see it showing up in a lot of stats research outside of class so its p applicable, id def recommend him, nice guy and easy class, also the one star review person is insane, anurag is lowk best teacher ive had here

The other review is pretty much on point. The only thing I'd add is that he has the best handwriting I have ever seen from a stat professor at umd, which really helps when he is lecturing (which is a rare occurrence later in the semester). He also moved our final up by 2 weeks, and then moved it back again a few days before the final was supposed to happen.

Imma keep it real. Dey is one of the easiest professors you will ever have just because he doesn't teach any material and his exams are literally copy pasted from the homework. Not only is the exam the exact same as the homework, he lets you bring in a notes sheet (size of a normal piece paper) with anything you want on it. I had him Spring2025 so I don't know if he will change at all after this semester, but out of all of our classes, he has probably shown up on time to 5% of them. He's consistently 5-30 minutes late for a 50-minute lecture, and most of the time he doesn't even tell the class. Up to this point he has probably not showed up to class 5 times, just making us all sit there waiting. On top of not showing up, he cancels class pretty easily such as 'Oh I have a bad headache so class is canceled'. We were supposed to have two midterms. However, before midterm 2 was supposed to happen, he canceled the entire curriculum and divided the class into groups, saying, 'Since you guys are doing so well in my class, I'm just going to stop lecturing, and you guys can make a project and learn some things yourselves.' LIKE BRUH. And after he makes this change he's MIA for up to three days so we can't even ask him questions about what is happening and what he wants us to do. I was gonna save this review for after the semester was over, but today he scheduled an appointment during his class time and didn't tell his students so we all just sat there AGAIN for 30-40 minutes, and then had the audacity to say he was in his office in an email he sent during his scheduled class period. How is this man even real T^T. On the bright side, his class is really easy and his A grade cut-off is an 85% so you'll be chilling. But if you actually want to learn some statistics and not have your tuition wasted on a professor who doesn't show up, you should choose someone else. He does respond to emails pretty fast tho, even if it is after work hours. This was also probably his second semester teaching so he might make some drastic changes in his teaching style. idk. If you have him good luck o7.
