Prof. Donahue-Shipp's an awesome guy, glad to have taken him. The course materials/info on Elms could've been handled better, but other than that he communicated in class what we'd do. Grades were rough sometimes, but: very fun extra credit opportunities! Donahue-Shipp's passionate about the craft, not sure if it rubbed off on everyone but it definitely rubbed off on me. |

I guess I don't doubt the other reviews given the grade data (which baffles me to see after this class), but this semester Prof. Donahue seemed so absent. He's got the skills but there was so little teaching in the class. We wouldn't get technique demonstrations and if we did they were brief and uninformative, he expected us to know everything already. He'd give us grief for being disorganized but he was the one posting slides to elms in the wrong file type so we can't open them, and also didn't have a class schedule on the syllabus. Sometimes he wouldn't show up, no notice, and his TA would do nothing (was annoyed whenever we asked her for help, sometimes would wave us off so she can keep doing her own schoolwork.) Prof. Donahue wanted us to come to class prepared with printouts and supplies, but he'd only announce on Elms what we'd need with short notice, sometimes as little as 12 hours before class. Also for a lower level ART class the assignment averages were Bs and Cs which I think is absurd, especially because he provides no feedback alongside the grades nor does he ever give a detailed rubric (usually just a sentence or two "graded on colors" "graded on value and material") if any rubric at all. It sucks saying this because Prof. Donahue's a good guy who knows a lot about art. To his credit, he'd sometimes does a lap around the classroom and have brief 1:1 conversations on our art, offering praise, advice, ideas. And we did do a couple of class critiques at the very end which were helpful. But overall Prof. Donahue didn't do right by this class. Seeing our work put up in the hall next to 110's stuff (a level lower than us) was disappointing, how much of a divide in skill you can see, I wish I could believe I learned anything but instead he helped me decide I'm sticking to STEM next semester cause at least in compsci I know when/why I'm wrong. |

Donahue is an incredible art teacher. He doesn't focus on classic painting or traditional styles and allows students to paint what they want, how they want. He manages to teach versatile skills that can be translated across media and genre, I feel like I learned a lot from his class and enjoyed every minute of it. He also was super relaxed about missed classes or late work. |
