Dr. Dow is a great person and it is clear that she is really passionate about what she teaches. However, the way the class is run is not ideal at all. There is a ton of reading for this class, and lecture does not introduce any new ideas; it pretty much just reiterates the ideas in the readings. She makes the class do group discussions almost every class, which can get repetitive. She also talks really fast, goes through the content very quickly, and gets sidetracked easily, so it is difficult to pay attention and absorb the material. There are four online "quizzes" which are nearly the length of exams, but she drops one. There is also one in-class exam which is all free-response and essay questions, which is a lot of writing for the time constraint. There are two projects: a small one in the beginning of the semester and the final project which is a 10 minute presentation. Her grading does not match the rubric as the rubrics are vague but her commentary is extensive. Many students in the class said that they wished she was more specific with what she was expecting on assignments. She also took extremely long to return grades and told us that we won't get our exam grade back until the last day of class. Overall, she is a very kind and helpful person but her teaching and class structure makes this class a lot harder than it needs to be. |

Dr. Dow is a very nice woman and you can tell that she is very knowledgeable and she knows what she's talking about. She assigns two pretty long readings each week and one quiz per reading (so two quizzes a week). Lecture slides are posted. While she did take attendance during the beginning of the semester, I'm not sure if she continued to do so. She focuses a lot on theorists and scholars and their theories. Sometimes it can be hard to retain information during lectures as she can talk really fast and go through information fast. Midterm was on paper and was a lot of writing, but she allowed us to bring in a cheat sheet. During the last five weeks of the semester, there is a group presentation each class that relates to the assigned reading. We also have to interview people of our choice and write a paper about this. Overall, she's a good professor but class can get a bit boring, especially when the assigned articles are so long that most people are not reading them. |

This a good class if you're looking for an A. I feel like workload was reasonable and you could definitely get everything done without going to every lecture which was nice. Class consisted of weekly readings + reading quizzes, discussion boards, a midterm, and a final paper. TAs do most of the grading and sometimes I felt it was too harsh for what the class was, but if you put a little effort in, you can maintain a good grade. |
