It's a very interesting class and Dr. Eisenstein is a great guy who seemed to almost always have a smile on his face. One thing I regret, though, is that he discussed many things which I didn't remember because they weren't directly being graded. It's up to you to get more out of the class if you wanted to. The class discussions are fun.

Coming from someone who thinks UH is a complete waste of time, this course is definitely worth taking with Dr. Eisenstein. He prioritizes thoughtful discussion rather than arbitrary assignment requirements, something I would never expect from a UH course. Most assignments do not take very long, and the larger ones don't feel like a chore to do because as long as you write something on your honest beliefs, you will get a good grade. He is also simply a charming guy.

Dr. Eisenstein is SO nice and friendly. This class was pretty interesting and easy. Although there were a lot of assignments, most of them only took 10-20 minutes. The only long assignments are 3 papers (~3-5 pages each) evenly spread out throughout the semester, and a group paper & video assigned around week 9. Overall, the course was interesting and helped with Gen Eds.

Eisenstein seemed like a cool guy, very smart, but 228B was not interesting. As for Eisenstein himself, he presented very disorganized and boring PowerPoints for every lecture, and I ended up skipping every single one as in this class, there is almost no structure at all. There are technically "Units" but every single unit is basically the same thing with a slightly different theme. The entire class is basically "What might happen in the future due to bioengineering". It definitely prompted me to have some interesting thoughts, but the class was never structured in a way that you could really learn or theorize anything that wasn't vague and boring. His presentations would just be bullet points that were never part of a cohesive narrative. They were just a compilation of singular vague thoughts, open ended questions, or statements with no analysis. I'm not saying that its his fault or that the course should be more in depth, but it is boring as hell, and feels so stupid, and Eisenstein was not super engaging. On some of the writing assignments, he took so many points off with very little reason, saying that my writing was very good but that I didn't answer the prompt even when I answered the prompt in literal complete sentences. The usual assignments are also VERY forgettable, and if you are a few days late on an assignment its too late and your grade will actually go down a lot for how little it should matter. That said, he was an interesting professor, not rude or anything, I just did not like how he ran the class.

Dr. Eisenstein obviously cares a lot about his field and tries very hard to get students excited for it. The workload for this class is extremely fair and while there are a lot of assignments to keep track of and complete, they do not take much time at all. Lecture can definitely be a bit boring sometimes but still this is definitely a great HNUH class to take since it is so easy.

Dr. E was enjoyable to listen to for the most part. The workload was very light for this class, except for a final project and video, which is graded very leniently. Highly recommend this class if you are into genetic engineering, or even if you aren't.

Dr. Eisenstein is an amazing professor and lecturer. He obviously cares very much about his students and what he teaches them (along with what they can teach him), more than most teachers I have seen. It honestly makes me sad when most students in the class do not participate because, even though it may seem boring to those who are only taking this class as a requirement, the information he teaches is very interesting itself and with the way he teaches it. Also, his choice of assignments are probably the best I've had. Pretty much every assignment is an easy 100% as long as you show that you actually think deeply about the information with its ethics and prospects, and how it relates to you and society. This is how I think most classes should be, and it is very effective for getting the information through to us, especially since there is clearly no right or wrong answers in this class.

Dr. E is a great person and the research work he does is really interesting and he certainly knows a lot about it. Some people were bored by his class but I found the lectures thoughtful and pretty insightful, albeit a bit repetitive at times. I feel like synthetic bio will be a real part of our futures after taking this course. The assignments are quick and easy and the few essays you do have to write are graded generously. I feel like he really just wanted our class to think about and reflect on what he discussed. The group project was kinda fun too. Definitely recommend this course for anyone in UH as an easy I-series.

Can be a bit boring, but Ed is a very interesting guy and I found lecture enjoyable. The work takes almost no time at all and 90% of it can be done in class. Grading is very light and the TAs are super flexible on due dates if you can't reach a deadline. He also understands that this is basically a gened and makes sure you can prioritize your major classes. I highly recommend taking this cluster

I first registered for this class because it sounded really cool. However, a few weeks in, it was immediately clear that Dr. Eisenstein was a really good research professor and was very understanding of the students -- but he wasn't the best teacher. To be fair, this class was just newly created, and Dr. Eisenstein had never taught it before. Still, each class was just listening to him drone through a powerpoint. Some classes were a struggle to stay awake through. It was pretty obvious everyone else felt the same, too. When he would ask a question to the class of 40ish, no one would answer. Repeat this over the course of an hour 30 minutes. Eventually class just started ending 30 minutes early since we barely discussed the topics. Later on in the course, Dr. Eisenstein began implementing small group discussions, which were way better. So, hopefully the course is a lot better in the future. As for the weekly assignments, they were just busy work. Doable in 30 minutes. However, they were named very oddly on ELMS (like 5A, 3D, 6C), making it super easy to mix them up. Additionally, they were also only open for about 48 hours, meaning it was easy to miss one. And if you miss a couple, it tanks your grade. Dr. Eisenstein promised to grade all late assignments, but only did so at the last second of the semester, causing a lot of stress. He is genuinely super busy, so I do understand. But just something to warn future people about. HNUH228B didn't really meet my expectations. It was super vague and hypothetical, almost seeming like a philosophy/ethics class at times. A common theme throughout the course was "don't worry about the answers, the questions are more important." I kind of understand that, but it also just feels like I spent a semester doing nothing at all. I learned very little. All in all, I just became more aware of the ethics surrounding redesigning life. Not sure what I expected from an I-series course, but hey, at least I got an easy A+. I do recommend this course, but know that it's not as exciting or hands-on as it sounds.

Extremely boring class. Dr. Eisenstein is a nice person and wants his students to learn, but lectures are not engaging. Assignments are easy but deadlines are inconsistent and it is very easy to forget to submit on time, which can hurt your grade. If you have a genuine interest in the content of the class, then I suppose it might be for you, but if not, I would not recommend.

Dr. Eisenstein is a swell guy. His class is interesting and he really cares about it. But, it is kind of boring. He stands there and asks rhetorical questions as his lectures. The weekly assignments aren't bad, just keep an ear open for what to write in them and you'll be fine.

He's a nice professor, but his lectures are unbelievably boring. The assignments are far and few between, but lack any concrete instruction. A large part of the grade is based on a group project, where he does not give any guidance. Any questions we asked him were immediately shot down with the same response "Our idea was too high level" without specification into why. The TAs were no help either, as they did not know how to do most of the assignments. A class that was meant to be an easy A and interesting discourse turned out to be more work than expected. This class is designed to be online. I received nothing from the lectures and had to learn most of the information outside of class.

Online teaching definitely threw a big wrench in the amount of value I gained from this course, but I still learned a lot about things my other bioe classes barely mention! Dr. Eisenstein is a super nice and understanding professor who clearly only wants the best for students. This class may be overloaded with information, but even if you only learn a fourth of it, you will still find it rewarding and eye-opening.
