Felts does a great job teaching all the skills both in lecture & in the water. You can get a lifeguarding and CPR certification in this class, I only went for/obtained the CPR cert. This class is intense!!!!! Take at your own risk and be prepared. You need your bathing suit on the FIRST day of class. You immediately do the pre-test for being a lifeguard, regardless of whether you are going for the cert or not, which requires swimming 6 laps (2 with front crawl, 2 with breaststroke, 2 freestyle… you CANNOT stop- you stop you fail… but you can go at any pace you want so can go slow), 2 minutes keeping head above water without using hands, brick test (swim to the other end of the pool & dive without googles to get a 10 pound brick and swim that brick back to where you started at the beginning of the pool & climb out the pool with no assistance under a time limit). It’s a lot- they metaphorically & literally throw you in the deep end on the very first day of class. A quarter to half of the class dropped after that. The good thing is I felt like no other day was as intense or rough as the first day of class/ first week. You have 2 attempts to pass the pre-test, if you don’t you don’t qualify for the lifeguard certification (so keep that in mind if the lifeguard cert is the main reason you wanna take the class). However, Felts will set up time with you and work with you outside of class if you want and need extra help! If you pass the pre-test, then on the last day of class you’ll take the lifeguarding cert test in the water demonstrating all the skills you learned in class. Even if you don’t go for the cert you’ll still learn all the skills which I found to be very cool and useful information! I don’t recommend buying googles, that was a waste of money because you're never allowed to use them (since lifeguards in the real world don’t have googles) except for like swimming laps for the pre-test. We spent around 2 weeks learning the CPR stuff (during that time you aren’t in the water) and then the CPR test is given in class & if you pass your certification (Felts grades it before you leave class) it is emailed to you. Your grade is literally just made up of participation, as long as you don’t miss more than 2 classes you’ll have an A. Miss more than that you won’t and will be at risk of failing the entire class. You MUST be on time, 2 lates is an absence so be on time. I have a disability and Felts was super helpful in getting my paperwork taken care of and understanding when I had issues in class. Really nice guy! If you're looking for an easy workout class to fulfill your KNES requirements this is NOT the class for you. But if you are looking for a WORKOUT, to learn lifesaving water skills, and to get a lifeguarding and/or CPR cert then this class is for you. |

Great class - John is super organized and will send out an announcement with what we will be working on before each class. It's possible to get a valid Lifeguarding or CPR certification and he does a great job keeping track of it. |
