Based on the previous reviews, I think he's changed and improved the course since then. Major assignments are self-graded, and he said he'll usually just give you the grade you say (he so far has only bumped people up, never down). The first part of the course gets the UMD required E-portfolio out of the way, with the later half focusing on actual writing, but you still get to talk about law enforcement and related topics too, so it isn't entirely off course. I will point out that the draft due date and the final due date are only about 1-2 days apart, making it hard to make decent changes between them, so your draft is typically the final. Otherwise, his feedback is very helpful and the assignments help a lot for the future (ex: current assignment about writing to a future boss as a team, like officers responding to commanders). Attendance is required but it's really helpful to go to lectures to discuss things. Highly recommend this class!

Everyone in my class had mixed reviews of him. We had a different professor up until like 2 days before the semester started. They never told us what happened to her but they just assigned him to our class. He was a really nice and understanding guy, but clearly had no experience on anything related to criminal justice or reports. He connected everything to British literature, which is his area of expertise, and is fine, but didn't really have anything to do with the structure of this class. I personally did not think he was a harsh grader at all, but some of my classmates received terrible scores and did not have great ending grades. He had us write a "case study" and "investigative report" neither of which were actually a report or case study. They were basically policy implementations. I was really hoping to learn valuable skills that I could carry on in my career, but did not find anything related to that in this class. So overall I think he's a great professor, just maybe not for this class.

Do not take this class with this professor. It has nothing to do with Case Studies and Investigative Reports. Attendance is mandatory -> for points. The assignments are pointless & get repetitive. It is a waste of time. Nice guy but terrible teacher. The entire class complained the entire semester about him & it was very clear he didn't know what he was doing.

He is super caring and you can write your papers on a topic that interests you, doesn't need to be related to the course. His lectures are long and mandatory but getting an A is not a huge time commitment, he gives lots of time before each assignment is due and email him if you need extensions.

His background relates nothing to the course. None of the lessons or assignments are relevant to the course at all. Gives very mixed feeback on your writing; tells you its good in one-on-ones but then turns around and gives you opposite feedback and a bad grade on the paper itself. Says he hasn't taught in years and it shows. Seems like he would be a good teacher in other areas or classes but just not this one.
