I want to start with the fact that this professor's grading is VERY strict and absolutely DISREGARDS the fact that 99% of people in this class have never done this kind of printing (or any printing for that matter) ever in their lives. She expects perfect and professional execution from the first project, which is absolutely unreasonable. In addition to that, the structure of the class was very poor, the time constraints are VERY stressful and people in the class couldn't finish projects on time and had to work outside of class (which was always problematic because the studio hours were limited and inconsistent, and doing linocut printing is really hard to replicate at home). Because of the inconsistent schedule, I once missed the studio hours (the only day I was available to make it there) and couldn't finish the project on time, receiving a 60% instead of an 88% for turning it in late. To add to that, sometimes she would let people go if they finished the exercise early, and once she did a quiz at the very end of the class, when some people already left, and although the weight of it wasn't that high, it brought my final grade one letter down (because she refused to acknowledge that when I emailed her). Additionally, this professor clearly had a problem with me just because I was a CS major. I dedicated the equal amount of time to both cs and art projects, but the way she treated me makes me think she believed otherwise. I didn't feel like she ever supported my ideas as much, and i always felt the bias towards myself (for the record, I have taken a lot of other art upper levels for my UL and the lowest grade I ever got for art was a single A- in my transcript) What I think was the most absurd thing is the fact that I (along with other people) received a C for the 3rd project (which I believe was unfair; both the execution and the idea deserved higher than that, while in the email, the instructor refused to acknowledge that). Getting a C+ in art is just ridiculous, especially if you're trying to do all the work not only during but also after hours. I know some people in the class got lower grades than they usually do or than they expect, which again brings me to my point that Prof. Gatlin evaluates the projects as if it wasn't our first printing class. Finally, I took the class in the Fall 2024 and I hope that something is changed in this class. The class had a huge potential to be very interesting, but you can't really enjoy it when you're treated differently and constantly stressed about deadlines and perfect accuracy.

Very nice and talented professor with a lot of interesting ideas. But the course lacked a lot of structure that made assignments confusing and stressful to work on. Going off campus for workshops was difficult sometimes as an on campus student and although these experiences weren't invaluable to me (very cool to see local history in zine archives and different types of art I haven't worked with or thought much about like "cameraless filmmaking", lithography demonstrations, etc) they didn't really relate to what me/other students wanted to do with our work. Frustratingly, mandatory workshops also took away from our already limited studio hours (always at the end of the day at odd hours, so some of us are unable to make the time to come in.) What I would say sucked the most is not having much feedback or clear guidelines for our assignments from the professor... Being open-ended and allowing us to be creative is one thing, but again it felt more like a lack of structure. I think we would have been more receptive to some of the subjects brought up in class if it was in a lecture/discussion type classroom setting (we read some interesting articles about printmaking at the beginning of the semester) but having to fumble my way through studio work made this course very frustrating.

JG is a nice professor, no doubt talented. However, this class produced little artwork and provided mostly student feedback. This course suffered from poor planning, structure, and teaching. Despite a tough grading, the curriculum lacked coherence, with excessive time spent on non-studio activities such as out of studio workshops, “filmless” movie making, and risograph instruction (which students can't operate on their own). Mandatory off-site workshops, many at the end of the semester, took away from crucial studio time for final projects. Limited workspace and a lack of proactive communication about assignment parameters and printmaking resources further hindered the studio environment. Nobody ever knew what was due exactly or what we were supposed to be working on, on any given day. Expect to devote your time outside of class working. When you receive your grades for your artwork, points taken off have no explanation or feedback. Never took such a stressful art course in my life.

Professor JG is a really nice and supportive art teacher. As someone who had never done screen printing before this class, the way she structured the first half of the semester to teach you the basics and build up a technical portfolio was really helpful and effective! She's also super friendly and easy to approach if you have extra questions. If you show up consistently to class and plan out your projects in advance so you're not wasting studio time, there honestly isn't that much work you have to do outside of class, and its a pretty chill atmosphere. For the final project she has the class do an exchange portfolio, so you get to take home copies of your classmates' prints, which was really fun. She also schedules some fun class trips - we got to tour the Driskell Center's gallery and archives on campus, and we got to visit Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, which is just down Baltimore Avenue and has a really cool print studio.
