Here are my thoughts. I gave this professor a 2-star rating to lower his average rating to a 3-star average. Do not take STAT 410 with him. STAT 410 is a very hard class, but taking it with him is probably the worst thing you can do to yourself. The class is weighted 10% HW, two Midterms each worth 20%, and one final worth 50%. There are 6 homework assignments, each with about 5 problems that look nothing like the class examples, probably because there were no in-class examples related to the homeworks. I had to self-teach everything myself, which is very difficult given that the textbook in the class is not the most intuitive. There is no point in showing up to class. The midterms were fair, but still bad since they are worth 20 percent and only 5 questions long, so each question is 4% of your grade, and there is no way to study for them, due to the limited practice problems available. The final was pretty horrible, I think the average was a 72%. Again, impossible to study for. The only redeeming factor was that he did curve the class by 20%, hence my three star ratings. Only take this class if you are good at self-teaching and have a strong statistical background (taken STAT 400). Good Luck. I heard Anna was good. |

Brutal midterms and final, but from what I've heard all 410 classes are difficult. Struggled to pick between 2 or 3 stars but ultimately decided on 2. He is actually a pretty good lecturer but it's external factors that make the class worse. Lack of online notes: he loosely follows notes from a different university (and I mean loosely, sometiems he'll just ignore stuff or teach something else) and doesn't post anything else. If you're like me, online notes, namely readable slides, are almost always the most useful material for any class. He does not have them, period. Additionally, the grading is very unhelpful. I suppose the expectation is to check with him if you want specifications but I expect more than literal nothing other than being marked off on my test sheet for how much we have to pay to go here. I was probably also the wrong audience for this class, however. I took it because it fit into my schedule and I needed a stat 400+ class. Don't take this class with half-hearted expectations and you'll probably have a better time than me, but I can't say I didn't have a bad experience. |

Hard class but the subject is fun. Midterms were brutal. They were worth 20% of your grade, and out of 20 points. So each point you lose is one point off your final grade. Final was 40%. Substantial curve at the end so it was okay. He covers stuff most STAT410 Professors don't: multivariate normal and random vectors, some stuff on Monte Carlo Simulation, and has a very theoretical focus (or so he says). He uses random walks for most of his examples. Exams are designed to test your understanding and are not plug and chug. No cheat sheet. Overall if you think you're smart, take him. He'll give you a better class than most people teaching STAT410. |
