Insanely good professor. As long as you go to class every day and participate, he wants you to get an A. I struggled on the exams, but they were actually super fair in retrospect. One note is that he is a stickler on attendance. Don’t be tardy. |

MATH240 Expecting an A Anonymous 05/08/2024 |
It's been a year since I took this class (Sp23). Looking back, I realize that I learned nothing in this class and this has severely under-prepared me for my upper level CS classes. I just had to ask my friend what a dot product and cross product are. (I could also just be stupid but I'd like to think that my 3.9 GPA says otherwise) |

Dr. Gumel is very passionate about what he teaches and his enthusiasm shows in his lectures, but finding resources to study with may be abit inconvenient. Would have liked access to more practice problems and more graded practice before exams. |

Professor Gumel is a nice guy but is not the most helpful math instructor. He reads from a note pdf on his computer which is word for word taken from the textbook, so you are honestly saving time by just reading the textbook yourself. Your grade is based solely on three midterms, the final, and weekly quizzes which are weighted much less than the exams, so if you do poorly on an exam your grade will show that. There are also Matlab projects in which he has no part, he doesn't even know when they are assigned/due and his TA is in charge of all of that. It is his first year teaching at UMD so I think the class experience overall is kind of a trial run, but he is not the worst ever - you really need to study in order to do well on exams (which he boasts about making hard) and he provides minimal study material so you are pretty much on your own. |
