She is the type of professor who believes her class is the most important class. She is nice, but very passive aggressive. The course itself is confusing. Each week you have a ton of readings and a quiz. Each week is a different unit. On top of this, she has 3 group projects happening at the same time. 3 different groups, 3 different types of projects all with their own separate timelines. After this you have an individual final project. It is just a lot to keep track of. The rubrics are also generally vague and unclear. The truth is that there isn't much to gain from this course. It's well intentioned to teach students about groups that are disadvantaged, but it gets muddled by the coursework and the professor's very obvious biases. Here are the good things about Dr. Hackshaw... She is a very lenient grader. The weekly quizzes are take-home, open note, and not timed. The class isn't designed to be hard or to trick you. It is very possible, and easy, to get a good grade. She also genuinely wants her students to learn about different people's experiences. She also has a lot of knowledge about the topics. However, her personal opinions are definitely embedded in the information she provides and how she lectures. If I didn't have to take this class I wouldn't. Her passive aggressive comments combined with the confusing coursework is irritating. I've asked questions and been given an attitude. She is also strict about technology use which is inconvenient. The course content also is redundant to some of the other policy required courses. I walked away with a poor experience because of the professor.

This class has a lot of side group and individual work. I don't recommend it. She told me my participation grade was near failing. Raising your hand occasionally and engaging in group work isn't enough to get a decent participation grade and it's worth 20%.

She is a very nice and understanding professor but the work load... you have like 2 presentations, 100 point quizzes every week, an election madness assignment which are weekly summaries 100-300, group discussions, many readings like pls relax

Dr. Hackshaw is an incredible professor! There were a lot of readings, but like the previous person said, you could quickly skim through them. Thursdays involved group discussions and presentations on class readings. There were a few papers, discussion posts, and a final policy brief. She is a lenient grader, but the TAs may grade differently. Best professor to take 302 with!!!!!

Super straight forward course. Lots of assigned readings, but you can easily get away with not doing them. Classes are majority lectures but sometimes group discussions for the last half. Major assignments are papers and graded very fairly if you follow the rubric. Dr. Hackshaw is great! Would recommend.
