I took this class to fulfill my literature requirement with a subject that interests me. While classes like CLAS170 are out there, I feel like the large lecture hall setting takes away a lot from the experience. Let me start off my saying that I am glad that I took this course and would recommend it to anyone with even the slightest interest in ancient Rome. One of the main benefits of this class is that Dr. Hallett knows that a lot of students are in other majors and does not treat this class like it should be the students' center of attention. It is the polar opposite of another course I took (HONR217) where there was essentially pages of busy work assigned each week for seemingly no purpose. Luckily I was a freshman then, but as a junior engineering student with a lot of work in other classes, this course was the perfect fit. There were three pretty short papers (2-4 pages) throughout the semester and for each one, the deadline was extended. I think by the third paper, the dates were ahead of the syllabus by a couple of weeks due to extensions. In addition, the papers can be rewritten to improve the student's grade until the desired grade is achieved. These papers as a whole were straight forward and involved either reading an article or book and relating it in some way to the I, Claudius television series. Around half of the classes are spent simply watching the I, Claudius television series with the other half for discussions / presentations (for a short final project at the end of the semester.) The class rarely went the full 100 minutes and a lot of the time we would watch an episode of the show and have class dismissed within an hour. All-in-all, I highly recommend this course and would gladly take a similar course solely for my interests in the subject.

I had a lot of fun auditing this class. Dr. Hallett very clearly knew what she was doing, and managed the class in seminar format very well. In class, we would go around the table translating portions of passages by Ovid. Out-of-class assignments consisted either of reading a scholarly article and answering questions, which would then be discussed in class, or one of three larger assignments based on Latin texts and scholarly articles. The final project for the class was the performance of a dramatic adaptation of a story by Ovid.

Certainly one of the best honors seminars to take at umd! Fantastic way to fulfill honors seminar requirements. Great professor! There are three 2-4 page papers along with two group presentations at the end of the semester. No final or exams. Spent 80% of the semester watching the I, Claudius tv series which can be very entertaining. She even brings snacks like brownies for the class to eat every week while watching the tv shows.

professor hallett is the definition of what honors program professors should aspire to be. This class is both interesting and entertaining. Hallett's course includes three essays with online discussion about every other week and a final group presentation. The essays are interesting and are short (around 3 pages each). They are also corrected and rewrites are accepted to improve your grade which is huge. Not recieving an A in this class is due simply to laziness. Professor hallett is a very nice woman who is no doubt passionate about julio-claudian history. I highly recommend this class which also includes the reading of two interesting novels and the weakly viewing of the I claudius tv show.
