i liked this class in theory, but i personally was not a fan of how this class was executed--it felt like we were being treated like kindergarteners. dr. harlig herself is very kind though! she would often walk around and chat with students about course content, and often had many interesting insights. she also uses a grade contract, which states that in order to receive a certain letter grade, you had to submit a certain number of assignments/attend a certain number of lectures and labs, with + and - being added at her discretion. the class itself felt tedious, but it was also a fairly easy a

Two stars is being a bit generous here... This class was so weird and Dr.Harling designed a lot of the strange aspects of it. Never in a college class did I think I would (to name a few off the top of my head): 1. Be cold called to share my political views in front of a class of 60+ kids by the professor 2. Act out dead people for a skit 3. Given a 30 minutes in depth explanation on how breast milk works including giving breast pumps to us 4. Been asked to write about the shortcomings of my table mates while I was sitting with them 5. Essentially attempting to be tricked by the professor to say something racist (also in front of the class) Many many other instances of weird stuff throughout the semester but if I kept going we would be here all day... The class is two brutally long 1.5 hour lectures a week that usually just make me either uncomfortable or humored as I watch her yap about nothing for the time. 100% bring other work to do. 80% of the class just opens their laptops and does other work during the class. The labs were much the same ordeal but with undergraduate TA's. My TA was really amazing but unfortunately got fired for being "to fun" (and yes she showed us the email). Even the TA was confused about what we were doing during class and stated it was awful. If ChatGPT did not exist OMG would the homework take forever. The homework is also fairly useless and the few assignments I legitimately usually just made me mad by the end by how ridiculous the claim in them were. My favorite was "everyone at Google is racist" with an article she sent to the class actually defending this claim. Another was "all grading is inherently sexist, racist, etc". It really left like she was just trying to get us worked up as ever assignment follows "something is wrong and everyone behind it are bad people for not realizing" The big assignment is an 8 page paper. Its fine but reveals the other problem with this class: the grading contract. Its really strange as it makes every assignment graded for competition. First if you miss two labs you automatically get a B nothing you can do about it. Same if you miss one writing assignment or three lectures. From a students final grade perspective is fine. From a learning perspective its stupid because it makes every assignment just done to get it done rather than trying to learn (which you will not be doing anyway). There is nothing anyone really has to learn from this class that is not inherently obvious. Dr.Harling really does not bring anything to the table considering her PhD is in dance which is in fact not related at all to engineering ethics! WOW at a top 20 engineering program and I am being taught one of my required engineering classes by someone with a dance PhD. The last thing is Dr.Harling is one of the most liberal people I have ever met. Even as a liberal myself it feels weird listening to Dr.Harling heavily push her personal political views throughout the entire class. Especially the aggressively liberal article headlines she would place on the board as we talked into class. It was fun with my table group to make fun of the lecture every day and talk about how ridiculous this class was. It was a very easy A for the number of credits so long as you have some time.

Labor based grading= show up, do work , get an A. Sweet woman, super passionate, sometimes wants students to be more engaged than physically possible. Go to class because make up work is much harder than actually attending.

This was an enjoyable class, interesting material and not too difficult, a light workload compared to the other honors class I've taken. Labor based grading can be confusing at first, but then you realize it's actually quite beneficial. Everything you have to do is very clear, and she communicates well with students. Definitely recommend this class and professor to fill honors requirements.

Professor Harlig's HNUH288X was daunting at first. It is very reading-heavy, with hours of homework every week. However, Professor Harlig herself is very nice. She leads the discussions well, and is very clear with assignments and expectations, which were never too high. You can tell she enjoys teaching, and it shows.

Amazing Professor. Class is very interesting and creative. Professor Harlig is super intelligent, and there’s nothing in this interesting class syllabus she doesn’t know everything about!! Labor based grading system is very fair and honors the hardest workers. No tests, projects and assignments are explained clearly.
