This class was very easy if you take notes and pay some sort of attention. I will say, if you are not really interested in this topic, you can find it boring (which is literally me because I am fighting for my life to stay awake). Definitely an easier I-Series compared to others. Dr. Hawthorne is such a nice teacher. I do think he tries to make it engaging. For his exams, they were all open note. In addition, he takes the top two highest exam scores out of the three exams we take (so basically you don't need to take the final if you do well on the first two). Discussion posts are pretty easy, I feel like they were mostly graded for completion. Also, halfway through the course, we stopped doing discussion posts (big thank you to Dr. Hawthorne). He and the TA (Ali) were very understanding and accommodating,

Professor Hawthorne was an amazing professor! He was genuinely kind and cared about your success in the course. He was funny during lecture and made the topic of pollinators very interesting. His exam review is helpful and he expresses a belief that everyone can succeed in his course. He also ordered BSCI126 stickers and pins for the whole class with a student's design which I thought was so sweet! I would consider this course a moderate to easy GenEd. There were 2 projects, discussion board posts on weekly readings, 3 exams, and occasional discussion section homework. The two projects consisted of a site analysis where you chose a flowery patch somewhere on or off campus and used an app to identify plants and insects around the site; eventually synthesizing changes in insect and flower activity to what you learned in class. The other one was a research paper (about 8-12 double spaced pages) on a topic he assigned related to what you are learning in class. A huge plus to this course is you can drop one exam grade, so if you do well on the first two, you can drop the final exam! The exams honestly were not hard as long as you were paying attention in class, taking notes, and reviewed chapters and lecture slides before the exam. I would definitely recommend this course, it isn't an "easy A" no college course is really, but I was taking 15 credits as a freshman and this course was not to overwhelming or stressful.

This is not an easy GenEd. It sounds chill, laid back, and light - but it requires hard work. As somebody who found pollinators and in particular bees fascinating, the class was made easier. However, if you have no interest in pollination and just want an “easy A,” this isn’t your best bet. The class is split up into one day of asynchronous videos and one day of in-person lectures to go over the videos. Dr. Hawthorne is an expert and his knowledge was welcomed. He thoroughly explained every concept, provided ample detail, and answered questions via email and in-person the same day - a rarity amongst professors. However, Dr. Hawthorne was not approachable. He never smiled (even with a mask, you can still tell!), he seemed cold toward his students, and often would berate the class for small, non issues like “not enough people are asking me questions.” For Dr. Hawthorne’s attitude, one star is knocked off. Another star is knocked off for the incredible workload this class carries. I was taking 5 courses, many of which are for my major. They all paled in comparison to BSCI126 in the work I had to do. Here’s what this class requires: weekly videos, weekly readings, 3 exams, a 10 minute presentation, a 15-20 page final paper, discussion worksheets, and a photography project worth 100 points. Yeah. That’s a lot. I enjoyed much of it, but not the part about putting in a vast majority of my study/homework time into a class on pollinators. The class is buoyed by the fact that the TAs absolutely rock. Lindsay and Tais were outstanding. They answered any and all questions, actually smiled when talking to students, and were reasonable graders. Overall: a time consuming class made difficult for those looking to get an “easy A” - but if you have any interest in bees, it’s worth taking.

BSCI 126 is a class that is interesting and not too hard at the same time. The exams can be difficult but Dr. Hawthorne cares about his students and tries his best to help them do well in the class. In addition, Dr. Hawthorne is very knowledgeable about the subject matter and you can tell that he is passionate about the material based on the energy he has in an 8 AM lecture. If you want to fulfill the DSNS gen-ed requirement, BSCI 126 with Dr. Hawthorne is a good choice to do so.

Dr. Hawthorne is a really nice teacher and he cares about his students. Exams are a little demanding because they covered a lot of readings but grading is ok. Overall will take him again.

Cares about his students and wants to get to know them, easy to do well with little/no effort, you can learn a lot if you just try a little bit skim the readings and know what they're about and you'll do fine

I would not agree with the review below me. While I did receive an A in the class, i wouldn't say it required no effort. It is not the hardest class I have ever taken, but if you put in the effort there is no reason you should not receive an A. There were 2 tests during the semester as well as a final project. The project was decently demanding but if you go into professor Hawthorne he will help you. There were also other assignments over the semester that were decently long but not difficult. In terms of Dr. Hawthorne, he's great. He was nice, approachable, and a great teacher. That being said, with the class being a lecture with at least 80 students, I would definitely recommend making sure he knows who you are- it definitely helps. All of that being said, the entire and your grade depends very much on your TA. If your TA is hard, I would say that the class would be. Overall good class and great teacher

This class was extremely easy. Literally required almost no effort. There is 1 exam. The rest of the class you work on a group project. Pick a good group-- you will work with them all semester. He is also super nice and is responsive to his students concerns. He is super knowledgeable in his field. He clearly loves pollinators and will make you love them too by the end of the class. Definitely recommend.

Prof. Hawthorne is very knowledgeable and down to earth. He treats you with respect and kindness and values your opinion. He tends to try to make an otherwise boring class interesting and uses powerpoints, TED talk videos, and hand on teaching to make sure you know everything you need to before the final project at the end of the semester. About the project specifically, it's a group project involving the people you've worked with all semester in your discussion sections. Basically you just design a hypothetical project to bring pollinators into an urban area and discuss how you would do it and what you would need. He gives you free reign to do whatever you think is best and generally just let's you run with it. The ONLY downfall I find with this class are the (simple) 5 - 10 point quizzes he gives on the reading from the night before. He calls them BCRs and it reminds me of highschool and kind of annoys me. They're not hard if you read the chapter thoroughly, but they are sometimes on obscure parts of the book. He does let you use your book during them though, so BRING YOUR BOOKS to class. The exams overall were easier than the quizzes, even though they did ask you to label a diagram in a few of them. For example, labeling the diagram of a flower. You go over it beforehand in discussion though, so just pay attention and you'll do fine. Otherwise, great professor. I'm a bit sad I'm graduating as he's pretty knowledgeable and chill. Take him if you need a fairly fun class for credit.
