Extremely disorganized. First of all, he's a nice guy. That being said, he never replies to my email. He calls students out during the class to answer the questions. He is really boring though. Many students fall a sleep. I even had some students who snore lol. What he says though, are quite unrelated to the book (most of the times). He digresses with his stories. I got all the attendance points though. For the exams, i got the concepts and explained well, but he didn't give me any point for not coining the term. So make sure you know the terms specifically. |

Do not take his course during the summer. We never received a syllabus for this class. We have a 10 point quiz every time we come to class on what we read from the text. We do not discuss the material or listen to a lecture before we are tested on it. There's no midterm or final exam, only the "quizzes" each class period. You get one point for every class for just showing up. I just find it really interesting that our entire grade is based off of textbook readings when he talked for 15 mins the first class period about how he hated the textbook. Also, during his discussions, I've been looking up the statistics and information he's been saying and some of the information is incorrect. He doesn't respond to emails quickly or do anything on Canvas because he admittedly hates computers. I've been keeping track of my own grade through Excel. I gave him a rating of 2 because he does care about his students and is willing to talk to you whenever you need him. Hint: For the discussion guide, it's a PDF format (umd.edu and search "edps301" and it's the first link). Save PDF to your PC and then use pdftoword.org to convert to a word document to take notes on your laptop. |

Dr. Herschbach is one of the coolest, most straightforward professors on the campus. He teaches you the history of education and it sticks. The class is out of 150 points and 30 of them are just for coming to every lecture. The class is very easy there are 2 midterms worth 30pts each, 3 pop quizzes worth 10pts each, and a non cumulative final exam worth 30pts. The exams are 15MC and a couple like 5 written problems. He gives you a discussion guide that it actually all the exam questions that he's going to ask! Read the book since everything is from the book. Fill in the guide and memorize and you should be straight. |

Dr. Herschbach is a cute little man. He is old, funny, and really laid-back. We only had 2 exams and 1 final, and were potentially given 30 points for attendance. Class can occasionally be dry and boring (especially at 9:30 in the morning), but you get points for going to class and he actually may say something worthwhile every now and again. Just work through the "discussion guides" and memorize those answers for the exam and you are sure to do well. |

I actually thought this class was pretty interesting and really wasn't bored too much (I gauge my boredom by how many times I look at my watch). Either way, I thought the class could be revised. As the previous poster mentioned, the book is awful. Instead focusing on the history of education the author goes on long tangents on how we have oppressed minorities in our past. Granted, this is true and should be mentioned, but I'd say the history of education is talked about 35-40% of the time, while minority oppression constitutes about 60-65% of the book. The point system of the previous poster is correct, but he told our class that a 100 is an A, so there is a curve. |

I must say I thought this class was not very good, although I do not think it was Herschbach's fault, but maybe it was, he probably deserves a 2 but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt. The book he uses was really boring, but could have been interesting if it was condensed, the author likes to babble. Herschbach gives you a "discussion guide" and if you read the book and find all the answers and memorize them then that guarantees you about a 90% on the exams. The other 10% comes from random stuff from the text so read the text and take extra notes. During "lecture" which consists of Herschbach going all over the place he will periodically say something like "I'm going to ask _____ on the test and the answer is ____" so may sure to go to class. He also is okay with you coming in late. Grading: 2 Midterms 30 points each Attendance 30 points Final 30 points (The guy below me was probably right about the curve, since I got a 106/120= 88%, but I got an A. It might only apply if you have good attendance, he doesn't like it when people have bad attendance) Hint: Tests were 15 multiple choice questions and then 4-5 short answer but you could usually choose between two or three different prompts for each short answer (But there is usually one short answer that doesn't have choices). |

he may seem boring, but not every teacher is supposed to be entertaining. just bring your study guide to class and he gives you all the answers...you do learn. the 3 tests are based on the guide so simply memorize everything, read the text as assigned (few mult choice questions always include stuff from the text) and you will be golden. PS: 30 points for attendance, which he adds 6 points too as a curve. |
