You’re doing yourself a disservice if you’re not in Alanna’s class for 347. She’s more action than talk, so you will be either filming or editing in just about every class. Alanna has extensive knowledge in videography and is very accomplished in the field. She is always willing to help and give her input on any camera/editing questions you might have. Also she is INCREDIBLY nice and will never rip you to shreds if you think your projects suck. She’s very much a “there’s no such thing as mistakes, just happy accidents” kind of person. Her optimism and careful constructive criticism gave me and other students in my class a huge boost of confidence. I can’t say enough good things about her, she’s probably the best professor I’ve had at Maryland. Take her class! |

Alanna is a great professor. This semester she taught us lots of different video production skills. This class is not easy and there are many assignments, but if you work hard you will gain many valuable skills and become a much better visual storyteller. Alanna gives a lot of great feedback, is kind, and is very supportive of everyone in class. It is important that you stay communicative and on top of deadlines. I recommend Alanna for this course. She knew what she was talking about and each class felt like it had its own set of goals and learning objectives that we achieved. The course builds up to a final project with three major projects: the silent story, the natural sound package, and the final natural sound package. There are a lot of workshops and mini assignments almost every week to prepare you for the bigger assignments. Get prepared to run to the equipment desk a lot! In this course, you will learn video skills, camera skills, how to use tripods, audio gear, interviewing, some lighting, and social media for visual storytelling. At the end of the class, you should be a lot more confident in your visual storytelling skills and more comfortable with the gear. This class sets you up well for future broadcast and video classes at Merrill. I recommend Alanna for this class - she is great! |
