She is one of the nicest and most caring professors there is. She took over my stream last minute and made sure that we got out of it what we still wanted despite the curve ball of our stream getting messed up. She is so smart and so available which helps with the content a lot. I would recommend taking any course you can with her, because she wants you to do well and will teach you with a smile on her face.

Dr. K is genuinely the nicest person ever. She cares so much about her students and builds a very strong connection with all of them. She is also super supportive and helpful with designing your research project for FIRE Semester 3. It's very evident that she wants all of her students to succeed and complete an entire research project by ultimately writing a paper, and is there for you each step of the way.

Wonderful professor and great FIRE stream experience. The professor is a very sweet and knowledgeable lady with a great sense of humor. She’s highly communicative and makes learning R approachable. The stream is well-structured and offers a nice balance of coding and research. In the first half of the semester, you're assigned a computing-related topic. You develop a research question, analyze online sources, and use R for data analysis, culminating in a project poster. In the second half, you're placed in a new group and choose your own topic. This becomes the research project you carry into Semester 3. You’ll continue the research and eventually conduct your own study in the next semester. At the end of the current semester, you present your proposal in class. There’s a weekly lab where you learn R and complete exercises. It only takes 1–2 hours per week, and if you miss your lab time, the professor is very flexible about letting you make it up. Overall, a great stream if you’re interested in computing and society topics with a strong research component.

I agree with what the other reviewers have already said! Dr. K. is really nice and helpful, and also just fun to talk to. Something else I'd like to add about the stream itself (computing and society) is that there are sooo many different directions you can go when deciding on a research direction, since computers are so integrated into basically everything we do now. If none of the fire streams seem directly connected to your major/interests then I would definitely recommend this one :)

i'd give her 6 stars if i could, she's an incredibly cheerful & approachable professor and also works to meet students where they are--for example, if you want to get published, she'll take the time to help you and give you the extra push to do that. she also clearly cares about students and learning, and in general works to connect with each student and really get to know them. definitely recommend, i've really enjoyed my time in her stream (and because it's also interdisciplinary, there's a lot you can learn/take away from her stream!) :D

dr. k used to be a middle school teacher and i think that somewhat shows in her personality, which i know some people didn't like but i personally didn't mind. she's really kind and helpful and her grading is very straightforward, so if you're interested in her stream's topic, definitely try to join it!
