Do not join Life Science Scholars. I found this entire program to be a waste of time, especially during the final semester. Candace was the replacement for Jimmy and I was among the first class to have her as my instructor. She provides literally no rubric or instruction for any assignments. She made us do a group assignment where we designed a business plan for a hospital. If you are not pre med or pre health, do not waste your time here. There is no consideration for students who are passionate about the life sciences, but do not want to pursue a medical/health career. Candace seems to assume that everyone is going to be a doctor or nurse or technician and focuses the entire curriculum on that. Candace gave me a 200/300 on my final internship journal. There was no rubric. Only a handful (less than 10) guiding questions for each entry of 10 hours. I emailed her and she could not justify why I lost so many points. Several classmates scored even lower; one person scored a 100/300 and also was not given justification. She told me my journal was too general because I didn't talk about the actual data I collected but instead focused on what I learned about working in a lab, lab administration, and how it changed what I want to do in the future. Additionally, the grading in the class is very strange. You must attend each class, which I understand. I was never late to class and attended each one. However, for one class, I had to leave 10 minutes early to address a personal issue, which I told Candace at the beginning. Several students were there for less overall time than I was because they showed up late. Despite this, I missed the QR code at the end of class for the exit ticket and lost almost 10% of my grade, going from a 100% to a 93%. Overall, awful class. Candace was a middle school teacher prior to teaching this course, and it is very clear. She teaches us like we are children. We talk about conflict A LOT. Its like she is teaching a bunch of 12 year olds about integrity and it all just seems very silly. |
