He is very easy to reach outside of the classroom and is super quick to respond to emails. He is unbelievably quick to grade papers and even gives detailed feedback going as far as correcting students' grammar. He is sweet and understanding of situations that might require an extension. You can tell that he genuinely likes teaching. After about 4-5 weeks in, it does focus heavily on Frederick Douglass and I can't say I'm personally interested in the topic but he's very enthusiastic about the subject and it makes up for it (a little). He appreciates students having their own thoughts and understandings of the work. Overall, I am very happy with the class. Would take again! |

Pretty harsh grader, classes are boring. The actual content is kinda interesting, but it feels more like American literature/a class on Frederick Douglass. He's not super personable, though he is quick to respond to emails and grade assignments. He likes to go on tangents and the majority of the class is on their computers definitely not paying attention to him. I don't know that I've learned much from this class and I honestly regret taking this section. |

If I were to use one word to best describe Dr. Levine, it would probably be quirky. But that is not a bad thing at all, it just took some time to get accustomed to his personality and style of teaching. I can see that he may not be some people's favorite professor, but he does really care about his students' comprehension and success. He is absolutely one of the fastest graders I have ever seen (grades within the day, which is especially impressive for papers), and he seems to delight in getting to read his students' work. He is definitely passionate about the material he teaches, and that is hard to not be infectious. Some of the early texts in the 17th century American literature can be a bit slow, but his enthusiasm and interest in itself is a motivator to care about the literature. He is an extremely fair professor who is an expert on what he teaches—he really knows his stuff. There are frequent assignments called reader-responses which are basically comprehension/interpretative checks of a text before the assigned class meeting. I found that once you get into it, they actually become fun and a little space for you to create your own thoughts about the text by simply writing it out. We had two essay assignments, and he allowed either a critical analysis or a pedagogy paper, which was a really interesting alternative that made the paper formatting fun to engage in. All in all, Dr. Levine is a great professor and one that I would definitely recommend! |

towards the end of the semester, I'm finding that he's very knowledgeable and insightful but his grading and critiques seem to be pretty harsh. I enjoyed the first half of the semester better than the second half. |

I really like Professor Levine, he truly is a good professor and engages with his students. He has a witty sense of humor too, and is open to all perspectives. I do think the readings are a bit dry like others have said, but he always makes it interesting when we talk about it in class by pointing out some things. If you participate more in class I think it's more interesting, so maybe it depends on who you are. However, I will say that for ENGL301 you're basically taking a version of american lit, and sometimes feels like a class about Frederick Douglass (I'm assuming bc that's what he studies and enjoys). I wish there was a bit more variety, even though we do study various things - they're shorter than the Douglass topics. |

Professor Levine is... okay. Though the readings can be dry, he's definitely passionate about American literature which helps with the content. He can be a little self-conceited at times which can be really off-putting. Overall, he's certainly not a bad professor, but I'm not planning on taking another one of his classes. |

Professor Levine is a great professor. I thought some of the earlier readings were a little dull, but he's a really smart man and an engaging teacher. The class is much better if you participate in lecture. Professor Levine is also really nice and funny in a wry sort of way. He also gives options for extra credit and lots of ideas for paper topics! |

Second half of this course was much better than the first half. His lectures are not attendance mandatory, but you're really missing out if you don't go! He's funny and draws a lot of interesting parallels between works. There are two big papers, a final exam and then you have to write 12 short responses over the course of the semester. The responses can be pretty fun to write, and he reads them all! Overall, he totally earned my respect. I think the TA's can be hit or miss. My discussion section was great, but that's because of the students in it, not so much because of the TA. |

One of the best professors I've had at Maryland. He's open to his students prospectives. The material he chooses is not the most interesting but he makes it entertaining. |

He is one of the best professors I've ever had at Maryland. He knows his stuff (I mean, he is the editor of the Norton...), and he's really passionate about everything he teaches. Also, one of the best things about him is that he likes when students think independently, not just regurgitating his or other critics' ideas. Professor Levine is wonderful. Take his class. |
