I was really surprised to read the few reviews here. Critical Race Counterstorytelling was an incredibly (as someone else had mentioned) eye-opening class. Assignments were short and easy, but meaningful. I learned a lot about my peers and have since seen the world through a new lens. I blindly selected this class when another student raved about how much they loved Dr. Liu having taken this class before. And they were right. Dr. Liu is incredible. Eloquent; kindhearted; attempts to foster deep conversation about the systems and structures of the world that we ought to be aware of to fight against. She definitely spent many classes talking, and I would not say that the TAs (who are graduate students) really taught for her, though they did try to drive home a lot of the takeaway points of the class. My TA always responded quickly (and I think I was in the same section as the previous review, maybe with the other TA). Dr. Liu and I had a few one-on-ones, nothing too long, but she always welcomed us into her office if we ever needed to talk further, recognizing how heavy these topics can get. These are only my personal experiences with her, and we know many student reviews are really biased in one direction or another (so take mine with caution, too). Although when sitting at the table with other students, a lot of us felt really similarly about Dr. Liu. She was engaging, lectured with purpose, and also wanted us to share with each other our true lived experiences instead of just broad generalizations---one of the main points of the course.

The class discussions were informative and very eye-opening. The curriculum is well-made, and the assignments are not difficult. If I could rate the class, I would give it 5 stars. The professor, however, ruined that entire experience. Rossina Liu shows no interest in any of the students. She talks briefly about a concept and tells us to discuss it with the rest of the class. At some point, the TAs would teach the class for her. The TAs were very nice but never responded to emails on time. She once told a student "you don't participate" even though she had participated on numerous occasions. She has a large ego and that gets in the way of this class's purpose and teachings.

If you are interested in social justice and CRT (critical race theory), you'll definitely enjoy this class. The assignments are not difficult; every week, you write a post on the discussion board and answer two of your classmates' posts. You also have a midterm and a final project (the midterm focused on white spaces, and the final focused on BIPOC spaces). Some people complained that the assignments were too vague, but I liked having the freedom to choose the medium/ subject of my work. This class covers three Gen Eds which is great. Unfortunately, Dr. Liu was not particularly interested in talking to her students one-on-one. Every time, I tried speaking to her, she would look distracted/ bored. She never followed up on our conversations and had trouble answering emails. My TA was kind but never answered emails on time.
