grades generously but you will need to practice at home or watch youtube videos because the explanations are not very understandable

Yes, yes. Mr. McDermott does have a few flaws in the way he teaches he'll talk about the following unit even though we're going to take an exam the next day, and he has messy handwriting and poorly made quizzes that sometimes have nothing to do with the subject or given topic, but he is very VERY merciful. I mean, he did drop 3 quizzes and a midterm because we did so poorly but you can expect to be given a chance to mess up and learn from those mistakes. Personally, I scored an A on the final exam thanks to him because I kept asking questions. Take him at your own leisure; he only wants to make sure you understand the topic.

Mr. J is very lenient when it comes to grading drops your lowest test score and quizzes. I would say he's better in office hours then in lectures. Homework can take a little while to complete but it does help on learning the topics. He does curve exams which does help and exams are very similar to practice exams he gives out prior. One piece of advice is DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE LIGHTLY.

The lecture notes were messy and confusing as his handwriting isn't the best. Sometimes, he would breeze through problems to the point where he confused himself and provided wrong answers. Homeworks are lengthy worksheets but are doable since they can be found online or you can ask other students, make sure not to do them last minute! Quizzes aren't too bad since they are open note but prepare for silence if you are doing them in Zoom breakout rooms. There are three midterms and a final. The lowest-scored midterm, quiz, and homework are dropped! If you don't show every little step on the exams, he may give you an entire 0 or take off a huge amount of points from each question, a common problem we experienced. Overall, he isn't rude but can be slow to answer emails and can have a bit of an attitude if you press him about a score. The drops and his grade cut-offs are pretty helpful but you most likely have to rely on outside resources like Khan Academy or Organic Chemistry Tutor to really understand the content. If you can, take someone else, if not, be prepared to dedicate a huge chunk of your life to this class.

Just not the best experience. Lectures were just him writing notes onto a slide - weren’t always terrible but got cluttered and on occassiok his solutions were wrong. Quizzes are fair, group work anyway. Major event was him failing half the class on second exam because he believed we were cheating. He also stated before class he would likely adjust grade cutoffs based on class performance, he did not curve the class despite final exam average being a 69%. Doesn’t respond to emails but I’ll say his office hours could be helpful for you. I wouldn’t recommend taking this class but if it’s your only option just make sure to go to office hours.

This guy accuses people of cheating left and right. If he doesn't like your answer, then you cheated according to his logic. Everybody who got a 0 from his accusations were too scared to report it out of fear of the math department taking his side, even though he had 0 actual proof. This is incredibly ridiculous so I have nothing to say other than this is one of the worst classes I have ever taken at this university.

He's generous with grading, understanding, and super flexible with his students. Admittedly, he doesn't in-depth teach the content in class (which was the biggest 'problem' with his teaching style, especially as someone who struggles with math). He just pretty much gives you practice problems to solve and walks around helping whoever asks. However, the good thing is, if you ever want help all you need to do is reach out. He will guide you through the problems the best he can, which most of the time was pretty helpful. He also hosted study sessions and office hours. As for advice for the class, what worked best for me was doing the smartbook/Knewton Alta (sometimes repeatedly) as well as the practice tests he gives out (which almost always mirrored the exams). For my class, there were three midterms total, worth about 45% of your grade, and the final exam worth 25%, on top of weekly quizzes, and Knewton Alta assignments, all of which were manageable. I would tell people who wanna succeed to make sure to be consistent with note-taking/practice or it's very easy to fall behind. If you're bad at math, get ahead of the assigned textbook sections so when exams come around you have a free few days just to dedicate to studying, make good notes, and most importantly, practice! Don't be afraid to go to review sessions or office hours. The biggest takeaway from Jermain was that he never wanted to see a student fail. He genuinely wanted you to do your best and was willing to help you to achieve that. If you put in the effort, you can definitely do well.

He's nice, understanding, and in my opinion undoubtedly qualified to teach at the most prestigious of schools. Take him and you'll be good.
