This class was half MATLAB and half C++, McGregor taught the MATLAB half, although it is switching from C++ to Python next semester I believe. McGregor was a fine professor overall as he answered any questions well and explained throughout the lectures not going too fast. Given this, the actual class was very hard if you have never coded before like me. You learn new ideas every class each more complex than the last with not much time for practice with them. The studios/homeworks were very hard other than the first 2, the TAs help a lot for studios and usually will check you off if you stay the whole time even if you don't finish it. The exams/final were very hard, just make sure you review the studios/homeworks and understand all of the practice exam. After you get your test back make sure to check it with the TA/Teacher as they usually give points back. There is only one section so not much you can do professor wise, just try to keep up with understanding the studios and homework as much as possible, use ChatGPT to learn harder concepts and go to office hours, not much else you can do. |

While he did code during class and went over concepts, the class was poorly organized and planned. He taught the MATLAB content. Homework was much harder than what we did in class, and I could not do any homework without UTF help. Studios were brutal compared to classwork, and the only way I could complete them was by sitting through the studio and being excused. Furthermore, the studio sessions were online, making it tougher to get help and get checked out when they were doable. The first midterm was a disaster; he did not even show up and one of the graduate TAs showed up late, passing out one paper at a time while taking sips of Starbucks Coffee. At the end, he curved the midterms and the final, without which I would not have passed. |

the big miss was the exam, not sure what happened there but he compensated the class for sure. only taught have the semester so probably a miscommunication there. the one-star below seems way too harsh for what seemed like a genuine attempt at first time? teaching this class |

Disregard the nonsense from the person below me. This class is ridiculously hard, and the homeworks are absolutely NOT similar to the exams—they're way harder. The studios are fine, but the exams were a disaster. For one of them, we only had 30 minutes to finish what was clearly a one-hour exam because the professor didn’t even bother to show up, and the TA arrived late. The average was a 50% before the curve, so yeah, the curve wasn’t just ‘nice,’ it was necessary for survival. Don’t let anyone downplay how unorganized and difficult this class is. |

decent professor and lecturer, only taught half semester which was odd but ok, didn't show up for your exam but gave a good curve on the test, average was low but wasn't that hard, many people got over 100% on the matlab exam, no need to go out of way to take him but don't need to avoid either, if you just study the materials given, practice tests and studios and hw, they are very similar to test |

Decent teacher, but a terrible professor. Only taught half a semester so luckily you only have to deal with him for that long. Ignoring my personal opinions, he is fine at teaching but super strict on illness and academic dishonesty (if that applies to you). Regarding his class, he did not show up for his exam, causing the whole class to start 20 minutes late when it took him (PHD by the way) 30 minutes to complete the exam. And while they did give us a 15 point curve to make up for it, a lot of people did not finish the last free response which was worth 25 points (exam avg post curve was 71). I would strongly recommend AGAINST taking his class if at all possible, but if you do just make sure to study and go to class and you should do fine. |
