During my time at UMD, and having completed both my bachelor’s and master’s here, this is honestly one of the most frustrating classes I’ve taken. There’s basically no real lecture component, so if you don’t already have a background in cybersecurity, you’re kind of on your own. Most of the learning comes from external platforms like TryHackMe and Orange, which feel like they are being used as the main teaching method instead of a supplement. For a college course, that just does not make sense. The class is also very disorganized. Each day feels random. Sometimes you are working on homework in class, sometimes you are put into groups to read and present for almost the entire class, and other times you are going over labs without much actual instruction. There is no clear structure or progression, so it is hard to understand what you are actually supposed to be learning. Another issue is that a lot of what was presented as lectures or feedback seemed to be AI generated, including sources that were clearly pulled from ChatGPT style outputs. That makes it harder to take the material seriously, especially when there is not much original explanation or depth added. Grading is also frustrating. You will lose points without clear explanations, and it is hard to understand how decisions align with the rubric. There is very little meaningful feedback, so improving is mostly guesswork. The class has potential. Cybersecurity from a business perspective is actually interesting. Right now it just feels like a collection of disconnected activities with minimal guidance. Would not recommend unless you are comfortable teaching yourself everything. |
