PLCY201 Expecting an A Anonymous 01/09/2026 |
Ok, so nothing that these people with bad reviews said is necessarily wrong. I just think its the wrong mindset. Mussington comes from a hyper professional career and that is the way he runs his class: vague instructions leaving the students to decipher what he wants. It can be annoying if you can't put pieces together but I think it's very valuable lesson. For the writing work he assigns, it's very easy to course correct if you do it wrong the first few times. The reason I gave 5 stars is because he is brilliant. This man knows everything, and yes that can get boring, but if you have a an actual interest in world politics and U.S. diplomacy/foreign relations then its super super interesting. From the description of the class you wouldn't really get that. This was an all freshman class, first semester, so many were expecting a high school style class. This is not that. |

Class is doable, but Professor Mussington does not include any rubric for any of the assignments. Grades on reading summaries seem almost arbitrary and often don't match with the general tone of the comments. You are allowed to redo three of them though, which allows you to boost your grade on any reading summaries that are dragging you down. If you're a person who goes to every office hour, takes the initiative on your own, and enjoys an unstructured environment, this class is for you, but otherwise don't. He seems like a very smart person, but unfortunately his lectures are hopelessly pedantic and he seems to recycle the same material in every lecture. He also will assume that you are extremely up to date on niche foreign policy developments. |

This class is not half bad, but for all that is good, take it with another teacher. 6 weeks into the semester, and there are 0 grades and virtually no feedback. The instructor has a TA and still has minimal to no feedback. There are virtually no rubrics, the communication is extremely poor, and almost everything is subjective. Generally, not a clear set of instructions on virtually anything, so hope and pray your writing is good enough to get an A, or tough luck. Content is repetitive and not hard, but difficult when you have to create a 2-page summary on papers that are less than half a page long. When conferring with other students in PLCY201, please note that this is not the same coursework, so keep that in mind. Lectures are pretty rough as well, but you are graded on participation (whatever that means because there is no rubric), and there are group projects, so you more or less have to show up. If you take this class under this professor, make sure you have a great sense of patience and you're at least a little good at bullshitting, otherwise you might be pulling your hair out by the end of the semester. |

This class was the most boring class I've ever taken, but despite the fact that I paid no attention in class I still got an A. The class is completely made up of presentations and essays. There are no actual in class tests. The grading is very arbitrary and subjective and this was the messiest class I've taken by far. Very disorganized. It was an easy A for me but I've always done well in school. |
