The class overall is not very exciting, to say the least. The professor is fine to take but the projects and assignments seem very disorganized and made at the last second. The grading is also not very consistent and kind of all over the place for what you actually need to accomplish. You don't actually need to take any notes or do any of the readings at all to ace the class. I would recommend taking AASP230 for an easy gen ed, as it only meets twice a week, and never any work on Fridays.

The professor is okay and clearly knowledgeable, but I wouldn’t recommend taking this class if you’re just looking for an easy A. I genuinely feel like I learned a lot throughout the semester but it was more from her speaking then from the readings themselves. The workload was overwhelming for a general education course the three major assignments would take me forever to complete. She was a fair grader overall. The discussion posts often felt more like essays, with students writing full paragraphssss instead of casual responses. On top of that, the reading load was intense honestly excessive for a gen ed class. I’m surprised more students haven’t mentioned how demanding it is.

Took this class last semester. Dr. Newby is a great professor and I found the course content really interesting and engaging. Quizzes are take home and no time limit (just due at 11:59), and fully based on the readings. Dr. Newby was also very accomodating as long as you approached her in advance and not right before a deadline.

Prof Newby is very down to earth, relatable, and pleasant to learn under. The assignments mainly composed of a discussion post every week+about 3 major writing assignments. Take this class if it is open

Amazing professor. Extremely understandable as well. Take her if you get the chance. You can tell she's an advocate for mental health as brings up how professors face stress too, which should be evident, as well. She says you can email her for extensions on assignments or exams if you need extra time or something, and exams are open for a week, typically 2-3 written questions with a length of 240-400 words long. Only 6 assignments, which is 3 exams, 1 final (which isn't bad at all), a presentation you do with a group in class, and a 30 minute (trust me, the time flies by in this) podcast you do with the assigned group you have. Outside of the course logistics, the conversations we would have in class would be funny, as the professors would joke around too (like Drabinski joking around about his sons not getting him McDonalds fries and eating it in front of him), serious (based upon mass incarceration), and interesting. 10/10 course taught by 10/10 professors. You should definitely take any other course with Newby too, as I'd assume her personality and style of teaching is consistent in those courses as well.
