I have to say I do think he's very overrated. I don't want to harp on the accent - I've had plenty of profs with one and have never had an issue before - but for the first time I think it really impeded my efforts to consistently understand what he was saying. Professor Nguyen is obviously very smart, and overall he is a fair grader. It's just that I only really managed to learn by reading the textbook, as I don't think his lecturing is beneficial at all. He might be better for other courses but MATH410 is tough and having a good lecturer for this course is extremely important for success.

Let's make this simple: Pros: great TAs, great lecturer, simplifies the class so it's easy to digest, funny VERY funny, nice guy will accommodate his students if need, makes his midterms and quizzes "similar" by that he means practically 1-to-1 besides small changes. Cons: no recording, posted notes, doesn't fully prepare you for the final in my opinion, but if you do well enough you'll still have an A. If you took calculus in high school he will make this class a breeze, and if you did not he is good, but I recommend actually locking in a going to lecture as it is VERY helpful. For two of our midterms they didn't print enough and we all started 15 minutes late, but we were given 15 extra points. I finished both these exams early anyways but these points boosted me to 100 on both. In the end, take him he will make your time at UMD much better than if you took anyone else. I have heard stories...

TAKE HIM. Does not prepare you that well for the final but your grade in the class will be so good (Mine was 95) that it does not matter. The midterms are EXACTLY LIKE THE PRACTICE TEST. You should get 100. My friend somehow got an A- in the class by getting a 93 on the final but that was insane because his grade was so low before. AND he curves. Its a no brainer take him for MATH140.

Class was very enjoyable, Nguyen was passionate about the content and would even go on tangents about the history of some theorems. The workload was light, we would have 1 medium difficulty hw about once a week, sometimes every like 1.5 weeks. There were two midterms and a final. He makes it very clear whats on the exams and he reviews relevant problems the class before. The average for the first midterm was a 78 which was surprising bc i thought it was very fair. To compensate, he made the next midterm much easier and the median score skyrocketed to a 98. The average for the final went back down to a 72. Overall, Ngyuen was a very good teacher who wanted everyone to succeed in his class. He would take time to answer everyones questions and made sure we understood topics before moving on. He would also respond to emails if he couldn't fully answer a question during class time. Highly recommend him for 410.

PLEASE TAKE THIS TEACHER IF YOU WANT AN EASY A!!!!! His exams are VERY easy since he give you "practice exams" before the real exams and only switches some of the number around. There are 4 midterms and the final and no other grades in this class. There is optional homework, but it really isn't necessary to succeed. The average on all of the midterms was in the high 90s. The final isn't made by him though so it is significantly harder than the midterms, but really isn't that bad. Just look at past finals and if you understand the concepts this is an extremely easy class. On top of that he is just a great guy! Very nice and approachable and has the coolest outfits ever. I HIGHLY recommend taking him!!!

I LOVE DONG QUAN. HE IS MY GOAT. The class in general is very easy. There is no homework to turn in, only worksheets to turn in at the end of discussions (your 3 lowest get dropped). Before every quiz (almost every thursday) and midterm (4 midterms), he goes over the kind of questions and examples that are VERY similar to the actual exam. The only thing you have to worry about is the final, just take notes during lecture. I bombed the final because I just focused on studying for chem, but thats on me, just manage your time during finals week if taking chem in the same semester.

I think I went to maybe 1 lecture every week, if that. Dong Quan is literally the goat. The practice exam he sends out is verbatim what the actual exam will be, he’ll usually literally just change the constant or smth. I personally didn’t really go to lectures because he does sometimes over complicate things but I would go for the exam review. You don’t need the textbook imo, I didn’t open it a single time. Your grade is so cushioned bc there’s a bunch of discussion worksheets in there (which r basically free 100s) and the exams r also basically guaranteed 100s, so it’s rlly just the final, which was also literally free bc there’s a UMD math test bank (all of the questions on the final were very similar to those of past exams). Overall everyone hyped this class up to be so hard but it’s genuinely not. TAs are also so so helpful.

I quite liked him. I never talked to him, you could tell he wanted you to do well in the course. If you're like me and you have a very poor calculus foundation (I only went up to pre-calc in HS then did stats senior yr lol) and you just suck at math and just want to get the course over with, I'd suggest going with him. He really sets you up for success grade-wise with the assignments you have to do. Coursework Breakdown: Homework: Homework was *optional* and was never graded, which was nice to not worry about on a weekly basis. The homework problems can be found in the book "CALCULUS W/CONCEPTS IN CALCULUS Sixth Edition" which can be found online for free. I found the textbook to be quite helpful (when I looked at it lol) and it definitely benefits you to do the homework problems before coming into class each week. His syllabus has a breakdown of what chapters will be covered each week + what homework problems you should do-- again, completely optional. Worksheets: Worksheets are in-discussion assignments you do that are focused on the material in a given week. The worksheet is to be turned in at the end of class which will be graded by your TA. I found these pretty easy to being occasionally a bit difficult, but doing the homework before coming to discussion definitely helps-- your TA will likely recommend you to do this as well. These were graded out of 10. You'll likely do just fine on them--the median for a lot of the assignments were 9 or above. This is the time for you to ask your TA about stuff you're confused about. My TA basically just bounced around the room from table to table to check how everyone was doing. Hopefully you'll get lucky and end up sitting at a table with people who are smarter than you, which was the case with me haha. Worksheets account for ~8% of your grade, but they do make up the majority of class work number-wise since you have them pretty much every discussion, which is twice a week. Quizzes: Not that bad at all. Weighted ~7%. You have ~5 of these across the whole semester. This is one of the BIG reasons why I liked Prof. Nguyen. He gives you borderline EXACT versions/practice papers of what the quiz questions will be, with the actual quiz just having a few numbers swapped for different ones--the concepts are the exact same. He makes it very easy for you to prepare for these. Mid-terms: Also not bad at all. Like the quizzes, he gives you a practice version about 2 days in advance which has questions that are borderline the exact same concept-wise, just with a few numbers or terms swapped. If you study the concepts of the practice mid-terms, you will more than likely get a 90% or higher. Weighted ~56%. Final: Weighted ~28%. Prof. Nguyen REALLY wants you to do well/get a good grade. He makes it very easy to do well in his class, you just need to put in the work yourself. Like I said, I never really talked with him, but he's a nice guy and seems super approachable. He can also be a bit goofy during lecture haha. The only reason I got a B was because I totally bombed the final lol. I should mention that the final is not written by just him, but is comprised of questions which are contributed to by other professors in the Math Dept, like other majors, so you will have some slightly harder questions on there. If you just need to get Calc 1 out of the way and don't need to worry about using calculus later and you choose to take this professor, I'd suggest the approach of maximizing your scores on all of the other assignments (which I know seems obvious), because this allows you to do terrible on the final and still have a good grade in the class. Someone at my discussion table said they had a 95% and they could get a 50% on the final and still have an A. Overall would recommend!

an absolute icon. First semester in college and i was worried about doing well in calculus because i struggle with math conceptually. He is hard to understand because he has an accent and he doesnt wear a mic but is really sweet and funny. Like other people have said he gives out midterm reviews that are literally exactly like the midterm just with different numbers. double points if you get ruohan hu as your TA, absolutely sweetest man alive and like a quarter of the semester in he started just telling us how to do the problems on the worksheets and we would copy down and get full points for the worksheet. even if you didnt take calc in highschool this class is very doable.

If there is any math professor you'd ever want to take, TAKE DQ!!! Although he may be harder to understand at times due to his accent, he's very enthusiastic and truly knows and understands what he's teaching. As long as you pay some attention to his lectures, you can't go wrong. P.S: Depending on how things go when you take him, the TA's might mess up with printing the exams which usually takes about 15 minutes for them to fix. You will be given bonus points on the test in this case. ALSO, really important note: He sends out a practice test through the canvas email the week before every midterm (the actual midterm but just with slightly different numbers). So make sure to practice those problems like your life depends on it.

He is a very good professor, but I do recommend sitting towards the front of the lecture hall though as he has an accent that is sometimes hard to understand and speaks relatively quietly. He is super friendly and jokes around in class often and always asks if anyone has questions. Also, he makes calc 1 a lot easier in regards to getting good grades, homeworks are optional and never checked, he always gives a sample exam like a week before the actual exam that is literally template to what the questions will be, just different numbers, and quizzes are not difficult. Only thing I do not like is that he does not record lectures or post any notes, just writes on straight chalkboard and erases when he needs more space, so going to lectures is pretty important. Side note: depending on who the TAs are, if they were anything like the ones this semester you will get points back from him on exams (basically a guaranteed 100) because, somehow this happened twice, they didn't print enough copies for the entire class and started 15 min late into the 50 min period :).

Taking MATH140 with Professor Nguyen was actually a life saver. I went into the course worried I wasn't going to be prepared for the content or the pace, but Nguyen actually made it really easy to understand the content. I will agree with some earlier comments that suggested you sit closer to the front because for this year he only did lectures on the chalkboard (so if you don't show up to lectures you're kind of out-of-luck unless you have a friend), and sometimes he can be hard to hear. He really does want his students to do well. His quizzes and midterms are super approachable if you show up for lectures. In lecture, sample problems that look basically exactly like whatever quiz you have up next are given and solved. He also sends out a sample midterm that looks almost exactly like the real one about a week before (of which we had four) and solves the problems during lecture. He's pretty funny and a good lecturer, definitely passionate about what he's teaching about (sometimes he'll talk about the mathematicians who have contributed to the stuff were studying), and overall I would suggest this class. To share some of the stuff that worked for me, * After you go over the sample midterm in lecture, copy the questions and solve them multiple times throughout the week leading up to the lecture. You can write down any questions you have about the processes and go to Math Success (tutoring) for them to help you reason out the rest. (Make sure if you go to Math Success though you already have a bit of an understanding of the concepts. They're helpful for confirmation of processes but I'm not sure how great the program is for being taught concepts from the ground up). * TALK TO YOUR TA's! They're really helpful, especially for worksheets that you do in discussion which can be super difficult. But if you understand how to do these, you'll do better than fine on the midterms. * Find previous final exams for the class and use those to study for the final. Nguyen has said, and I quote, "The midterms are heaven and the final is hell", and I believe him. So try and use previous finals to study, because they probably repeat the question style. I'm not really sure how finals are going to go (we haven't taken it yet) but the class itself sets you up well to take the blow that the final might have on your grade as long as you do decently on the midterms. * Lastly, I hate to be this person, but ya gotta show up to class. Set however many alarms you need and get in that lecture hall and ATTEND DISCUSSION. Besides the fact that you will have a graded worksheet every discussion, it is also in your best interest, and in the best interest of your grade and understanding of the topic to show up. So just go to class man.

This class is so chill! There are four midterms that you take in lecture and five quizzes that you take in discussion. If you go to lecture around exams/quizzes he goes over practice questions that are pretty identical to the real ones. I will say he can be a little hard to understand sometimes, so if you haven't taken any sort of calc class before, his lectures may be slightly confusing. Also, he doesn't write the final so it's going to be much more challenging than the midterms. There is no mandatory homework for the class, but you do have to go to discussion because there is always a worksheet that is collected and graded. Dong Quan is also just very nice and funny!

This class is so easy. Only reason I got a B is because I slacked off during an exam and didn’t do the study guide. Every other exam I aced. As long as you attend lectures and do the study guides you’ll be fine. The study guides are the exact same as the midterms just different numbers so you’re ready for them. He’s also got some pretty solid jokes. Only tough part is that he doesn’t make the final. But he does his best to make sure you’re prepared. Absolutely loved his class!

Such an easy class. The only suggestion I have is to go to his lectures near the exams/quizzes because he goes over the exact examples that will be on the test. I haven't put any effort in this class and have a high 90 because he gives every question that will be on every test he makes, just with barely different numbers. Watch out for the final, though, because it is not just made by him. He also makes jokes in class and is a nice guy in general.

Dong was a really nice professor, and quite frankly, taking this course with him is an easy A. This course consists of 6 HWs, a midterm and a final. The HW contained a mixture of mildly difficult problems and very challenging problems. The challenging problems were very theoretical in nature. I will state, though, that he usually went over the challenging problems in class, and outright gave entire answers for those problems. However, I think the HW could have been a little easier and less theoretical. His exams are pretty chill. Unlike the previous semester (which had a take-home midterm and a final that was basically optional), we had an in-person midterm as well as a take-home final. The midterm was very fair - he gave us practice problems for the midterm that correlated very well with the actual exam. Most people got an A on the midterm. The final was a little harder, but due to it being take-home, it was very little stress. His lectures were not the best, but also not the worst. His accent is very thick, so it is difficult to understand what he is saying at times. I found it difficult to learn from his lectures, but it wasn't the biggest problem as the textbook contains the content that he covers in class. He also does not record lectures, nor does he post notes. I would prefer if he at least posted notes for his lectures, but again, because of the textbook, it wasn't that big of an issue. I'd like to note that he is very passionate about Number Theory. He also has an impressive knowledge of Math history, and often goes in depth into it in his lectures. This made his lectures pretty enjoyable, in my opinion. Also, the TA and the professor were extremely lenient with the grading, which made this course super chill in general. Overall, this professor was a life-saver for me this semester, as I was stressed out with other courses. I'd recommend taking Dong if you want an easy A. I would have preferred to learn a little more, but still think I gained something from it (got a lot of practice with congruences, and learning all the tricks and manipulation you can do with them). I would like to note that MATH406 is actually a really difficult course if you were to take it with any other professor - only take this course if Dong is teaching it.

The review below summarizes a lot about the class, but I'd like to add an update that the grading structure did change mildly: there is no "50% of each of the two highest categories" thing for us, so you have to do decently well on the midterm (the final is online for us), but it's still pretty relaxed and he goes over extremely similar exam problems during the in-class review. Some homework problems are very very difficult, but he will usually give you a major hint (pretty much the entire solution) in class for those ones. There are a few ways Dong could improve lectures, in my opinion. He tends to go on tangents about the history of mathematics or about something related but not fully comprehensible to most of us undergraduates, often involving abstract algebra. Obviously, this is in part due to his love for math, and the enthusiasm is a nice break from the bore of our other classes, but I felt like it would have been better to focus on lecture material in some cases. He is clearly very intelligent because he seems to pull many of the proofs straight from memory.

Dong Quan was a great teacher and very nice, but due to the class's structure, I'd say very few people came out of the class having learned much of the content. There were two assignment types on which students were evaluated -- homework and one midterm. There was also a scheduled final but the grading structure required nobody to take the final when it came around. (50% each of the highest two categories between homework, midterm, and final). With this generous grading structure, almost all homework questions were covered in class before their due date and the midterm was open book, making each of these assignments almost guaranteed to yield high grades for all students. With this, no matter how great Dong Quan's lecturing was (which was very good) students didn't have to retain information, and therefore many left the class no better off than when the semester started. If you take Dong Quan, you will get a great grade with minimal effort, but it will not be rigorous, and you will not learn nearly as much as you would taking classes with any other professor.

As other reviews have mentioned, Dong Quan is a great teacher when it comes to explaining and developing concepts. He is always willing to go out of his way to recap unfamiliar or forgotten material, and will answer any question asked in detail. Furthermore, he is very nice and wants everybody to succeed doing everything in his power to help every student get good grades. The problem with this, though, is that there is a notable difference between students learning material and getting good grades. Graded exercises are made trivial after discussed in class (often before their due date, and in detail) and due to a generous grading structure, nobody in the class had to take the final since a take-home midterm was half our grade. The grading structure was the top two categories out of homework, midterm, and final, each of the two weighted to be 50% of our final grade. I don't think anybody ended the course without an A+, though, and certainly not without an A because so many assignments became copy-and-paste from his notes in class. This resulted in students receiving good grades without the need for them to learn or understand material. Looking at some exams in the testbank, for example, I'm lost on many of the questions, with question formats we've never seen. I'd attribute this to a mix of a focus on theory from Dong Quan and a lack of rigor to the course. While Dong Quan is great at teaching, one of the fundamentals of learning is practice, and without any graded assignments that actually required students to do anything other than copy and paste notes, it's hard to say that anybody came out of the class knowing a ton more than when they entered. On a separate note, I want to verify his habit to extend due dates and his somewhat frequent online lectures. There's nothing necessarily bad about either of these, but both are something to be aware of. In conclusion, take the class if all you care about is your final grade. In this case, you will get the grade you want with minimal effort. Otherwise, opt for another more rigorous teacher.

First of all, Dong is a super nice guy. He is funny while he teaches and he can keep your attention. He does have a semi-strong accent. I haven’t seen anyone else talk about it but I could not understand everything that he said. (Maybe 1 in 10 words I didn’t understand) The class is very easy, he drops a lot of assignments and even the lowest midterm. If you have calc experience you will most likely get an b+ or higher. His actual teaching is not the best though. He mostly does practice examples from the homework, which is nice, but it doesn’t give you a holistic understanding of the topic. Without lots of studying it can be hard to really learn the material that you need for the common final. (He also starts the year literally saying”God bless you” for the final)

He always goes over the topic before them, i always took notes so they were never an issue. Quizzes in discussion are reviewed in lecture and they are almost the same. From his teaching I see that he is passionate about what he does. Be prepared for at least some random quizzes… listen, take notes, and be there on time. These are a great boost to your final. Also, his midterms are exactly like the practice he gives and the class before he goes over all of it for you. He also explains very well. For homeworks, Cengage is a pain, but there is not anything he can do because it is standardized. To make it easier, he always goes over homework's during class and extends all of the deadlines. Did I mention that this guy is funny asf? He could be talking about math and come up with the most random stories and then occasionally say the most random nonchalant things. In terms of difficulties, he basically gives you the sample midterm test for practice but changes up some numbers on the ACTUAL midterm, so just do the sample and you should be good. (*I WOULD RECOMMEND STUDYING HARDER FOR THE FINAL BECAUSE HE DOESN'T MAKE THOSE SO THE QUESTIONS WILL BE DIFFERENT AND HARDER*).
