I concur with the previous reviews. Prof. Ott's book on chaos is exceptionally good for self-learning, which, unfortunately, makes his course redundant. He focuses too little on modern stuff like quantum chaos, thermalization, random matrices, networks, chimera, machine learning etc, which could have drawn students from different research interests to his course and put the course material in the context of modern research directions. But nice course overall, good guy, medium prof. |

Professor Ott's lectures are alright, as mentioned below. He is very dry, and simply goes over derivations for the current topic. He jumps around in the textbook some, which can be difficult to follow. However, his grading is fair and the exams are quite straightforward. If you go over his supplementary problems from homework and review quiz questions, the exams will be quite similar. He did give out a few supplementary notes that he wrote that are not included in the textbook, so be sure to focus on those. He likes to ask practical questions derived from these notes. Overall, he was an average professor. His lectures were not great, but you can tell he is a very intelligent and well-respected physicist. I'm not sure how the final course grades were distributed, but the course grading scale seemed pretty fair. |

Ott is an okay lecturer. His lectures are heavily theory based (derivations) and lectures straight out of the book. Think of your typical physics professor. I thought he was okay in the beginning, but as time went on, I realized I wasn't learning anything useful in lecture, and I was better off reading the book. The lecture don't really help the homework and exams. He can be boring but this class is doable. Exams aren't computationally difficult, just review his old exams and you should be fine. He gave out 3-4 B's and 4-5 A's when I took it. |

Professor Ott is one of those professors who is too smart for teaching. The fact that he is not aware of the class's understanding, or lack thereof, is also clear. He writes on the board and blocks what he writes with his body, talks into the board, and often mumbles. Medians of the exams were in 40s and 50s. You are better off taking a different professor. |
