Jaime is a great teacher. While his lecture style is a little dull, he explains the content thoroughly and his office hours are very helpful. They were often pretty sparsely attended, so when I went to his office hours, I basically had one-on-one tutoring. He was very open to students asking questions and I felt like I could much better understand the content with his explanations outside of class. If you don't want to put in that effort, then maybe he's not the best teacher for you, but I really enjoyed learning with him over the course of the semester. |

This was one of the easiest "weed out" classes and Jaime was a big part on why it was so easy. The content itself is just formulas, as he said at the beginning of the course that there would be no proofs, so as long as you know the formulas, you'll be fine for the course. He tells you the formulas, sometimes can be a little confusing but if you look at the textbook to double check, you'll be good. I agree with the previous reviews that some of the letters and signs he uses are pointless and confusing, but I'll give him a pass b/c it's his second sem of teaching. His midterms are very easy, often using 1-2 questions that were done in class. Averages were objectively good (82, 90, 80, 69) with the worst midterm average being the student's problem (A series test w/o Taylor series). The structure questions on the midterms are similar to the ones on the final. The grading does take a little while but it's not a big deal. The HW is a hassle but it's only 3% of the grade so you just gotta do the best you can. As for him answering questions, I didn't have an issue with the ways he answered them, especially with the number of bad questions that were asked (questions like someone asking why put an "x" next to pi when integrating pi in dx terms). To the students who are going to take this course or anything like it: don't blindly ask questions. Actually try to understand it first. I recommend taking Jaime to the people that like a little more independence or already have taken BC calc. If you want a more traditional approach where the prof does all the work, look elsewhere. |

I think overall this teacher was just okay. To clarify first, this class with this teacher only really gets more difficult as the semester goes on. As a person, the teacher was just okay, he was very chill but also didn't really care that much in general (good and bad thing i guess?). Answering questions he wouldn't really clearly answer it and it was clear that most people in the class wouldn't understand what he was talking about. For teaching, I felt that he was an alright teacher at the start but as the class got more rigorous it got increasingly more difficult to understand what he was teaching. For HW, I would give it maybe 1.5/5 stars due to just how ridiculously hard they could be and sometimes just unrelated the material was to what was being taught. For TA, I had Cameron Yeagle and I would give him 5 stars just how helpful and friendly he was, much much better teacher than the professor I felt. If you can, try to find a different professor. |

I know there are a lot of negative reviews for his Calc 2 class, but for 410 he was really great. He teaches straight out of the textbook for the lectures, but I honestly like that. He is super nice and helpful during office hours. I'm really not getting the "makes you feel like an idiot for asking questions" comments because this man would go through the same problems multiple times with me until I got it. You can tell he wants you to understand the material. The course was structured with 3 quizzes and homeworks, 2 midterms, and the final. He dropped the lowest scores from the homework and quizzes and he curved the midterms by 2-3 points at the end of the semester. One thing I really liked is he had a lot of extra credit on the exams, the final had 110 points worth of questions but was only graded out of 100, so you could get 10 points off and still get a perfect score. He is very generous with partial credit on exams as well. Highly recommend. |

Paradela is an okay professor. For the most part, his lectures were understandable unless it was the series and sequences unit, where I had no idea what was going on. His handwriting can sometimes be messy and difficult to understand. He will very often make mistakes when working out the problems. He would also have the HWs assigned incorrectly which was frustrating. I also thought him giving a quiz a week before the final was wrong. That being said, he is a chill dude and sometimes the class was lowkey comical. I thought his exams were very fair too. I would take him again if I had to, but would recommend trying someone else. |

Paradela is not a teacher, he acts like a research professor who does not care to actually give lectures. He shows up late sometimes to the lectures, he writes messy on the chalkboard, can barely hear him in the back of the room, and administratively is a mess. I went from an A the entire year to a C+ after a slightly substandard final and a bunch of grades slammed in mid-December. My TA was relatively unhelpful too. He doesn't curve, except he does drop one exam which is nice. I stopped going to lecture to just teach myself the content. |

As an incoming freshman who has never taken Calc II before, I liked Jaime as a professor because he was straightforward with teaching and used a LOT of examples. He is very understanding of students because he always asks a lot of everything makes sense. He is also accommodating to students who may not be the brightest or have special needs. He may mess a few things up like homework dates or test questions, but fairly compensates and rectifies those mistakes by changing the dates or giving free points. |

I have to give this professor a low rating... First of all, his Spanish accent makes his course hard to understand, which affects the learning experience. For instance, he pronounces the word "derivative" as "deliwadi". If you say that the accent part is my problem, I will take it since I am an international student with English as a second language. But there's MORE. On top of that, he only uses examples directly from the textbook, offering no deeper explanations. His handwriting is a mess, with confusing signs and symbols that make it hard to follow in class. This includes messing up the letters "p" and "l", as well as strange signs like the "*". Finally, about the exams and assignments. The exams' difficulties are okay, just get harder every time. (my grades fell from 95 at the first midterm to 85 at the final) His grading is so slow that we can only get our midterm grades back after we take the NEXT midterm. The deadlines of assignments are strange sometimes (where we have to do homework assignments with materials not involved in class yet). The homework system is also hateful when it pops out "This question will award no credit after attempt 1" while other questions allow attempts up to 5 times. However, I want to give a huge shoutout to the TA. The TA is incredibly interesting and always makes sure to explain things clearly. He gave no attendance credits to the discussion right after a midterm exam. (I think he got the point that nobody wants to rush to a discussion at 8 AM right after a stressful exam) Grading is fair and easy, and they are super helpful when I’m absent, offering clear explanations and support ONLY FOR ME FOR 20 MINUTES in his office. Sadly the excellent TA cannot save this course. This is my first few months in the United States of my lifetime. I ended up self-studying for 90% of the time. I'd like to call this course a bad first experience because it is just so disappointing. I will give 2 stars, all of them to the TA. |

I had to give this professor a low rating. His Spanish accent makes it difficult to understand him, pronouncing the word "derivative" as "daliwadi", affecting the learning experience. I think most of you Americans will be okay with the Spanish accent since I am an international student with English as a secondary language. If you say the accent part is my problem, then you just can't bear the rest. He uses examples only and directly from the textbook (the textbook, at the same time, doesn't cover the complex number part), offering no deeper explanations. His handwriting is also a mess, mixing around letters like "p" and "l" with confusing signs and symbols (like the sign "*") that make it hard to follow in class. On top of all that, our midterm grades only come out right before the next midterm exam. The midterm exam's difficulties are still acceptable though (it gets harder every time), and the final exam is a little bit harder. But this doesn't help too much since the lectures are just a waste of time. However, I want to give a huge shoutout to the TA (this is why this comment is 2 stars instead of 1). The TA is incredibly interesting and understanding and always makes sure to explain things clearly. He also didn't give attendance credits to discussions right after midterms (I think he gets the point that nobody likes to rush to a discussion on Monday at 8 AM right after an exam). Grading is fair and easy, and he is super helpful when I’m seeking help after an absence from class, offering clear explanations and support ONLY for me for 20 MINUTES on a concept in his office. He deserves all the praise! But still, this has been a frustrating and unhelpful course due to the professor. This is my FIRST few months in the United States for my lifetime. I'd like to call this a terrible first experience. I ended up spending 90% of my time self-studying. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone. |

Not a great teacher, Jamie often writes very messy on the board which is sometimes compensated with all of his examples being from the textbook, but some units like complex numbers are not in there. Going to keystone tutoring was a necessity to complete some of the homework’s as even chatgbt and wolfram alpha would get them wrong and they’d be needlessly complicated for something that’s only 3% of the grade. Reading the textbook and going to TA office hours will help, but this is just a hard class in general especially if your last calculus class was AB in high school |

Paradela is a hit or a miss. If you have taken Calculus II or an equivalent course back in high school, you won't have many problems. If you are an older student like a sophomore who is starting their math education from scratch, you will unfortunately suffer. Although his exams are pretty easy and although he is somewhat honest about what we can expect to be on a quiz or midterm, his teaching methods aren't very useful. First of all, he reads straight out of the textbook and he also doesn't record the lectures because he uses a LITERAL chalkboard. Also, although it is understandable with 154 of us, he also takes FOREVER to grade exams. For example, I didn't get my first midterm back until the day after I had already taken the second midterm. I honestly think you may be better off reading the textbook and doing the practice problems compared to trying to pay attention during the lectures. |

Alright professor, he wasn't particularly bad as a professor, but nor was he particularly good. He sometimes has trouble understanding the questions that he's being asked, and he usually responds in a very blunt and brief manner, which to some people may have come across as sassy or uncaring, but if you just keep asking your question and be patient, he'll try to answer the question. Anyways the major problem was that many things were not taught in the lecture and we had to learn them completely from scratch in the discussion or online when doing HW. Ultimately I don't think that's due to him being a bad teacher and more to do with the fact that Math141 is a weed out class and in general not built for student success. |

DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! Only take this professor if you are really good at teaching yourself. He does not explain the material well and refuses to answer questions about the material in class. Furthermore, he even ignores or gives "sassy" responses, like mentioned in the previous review. In lecture, rather than explaining the material, he simply just reads from notes and examples written in the book. The poor teaching method translates to the homework, where there is material that you never go over in class. The one thing about this class was my TA, who did an amazing job explaining concepts that this professor could've just taught us himself. The exams are also pretty difficult, but the class itself is not meant to be that difficult. If you are looking for a math 141 professor, I highly recommend taking anybody but this professor. |

MATH141 Expecting an A- Anonymous 12/09/2024 |
Easily the worst professor I've ever had. He very clearly doesn't want to be there teaching and is rude when responding to questions. The other review that talks about how he's "sassy" is ignoring that people don't ask him questions to try to be funny — they ask them because they don't understand whats going on. When you ask him a question he often gives a very unhelpful response, and he always acts like you're an idiot for not already understanding. His lectures are just him writing the examples from the textbook on the board and he doesn't explain them very well. Also his lecture notes are definitely provided by the math department, and you can tell that he doesn't read them before class. Multiple times he has had to stop the problem he's working on and do a little bit of math on the side to understand the steps his notes skip. He's also invented his own notation during lecture including "star" (*), "dot" (.) and "double star" (**). His new notations only made that lecture more confusing, and I ended having to teach myself how to do partial fractions, which aren't even that hard. His homework is awful, but I think thats a universal problem for MATH141. The main problem with it is the due dates are all over the place. At the start of the semester he said we would have homework due Tuesday and Thursday morning, just before our discussion section. However we quickly realized that our homeworks were asking us questions that covered topics we hadn't reached in lecture yet. We asked him about it, and he did push them back, but he messed it up at some point and the due dates got really screwed up. Some weeks we've only had one homework, and others have had 4 assignments. This wouldn't be a huge problem, except that these assignments usually take upwards on an hour, so 4 of them in a week ends up being about 4-5 hours of homework. His exams are difficult, but thats normal for this class. What makes his exams bad is that he sometimes realize mid-exam that he messed up some of the questions. During one of our midterms he ended up changing multiple questions, after realizing he made them unsolvable. The one saving grace of this class was my TA, who is the only reason I've been able to do well on most of our midterms. Right now i'm expecting an A-, but if I can somehow get a basically perfect score on the final I'll get an A. |

Regardless of who you take 410 with, it's gonna be really hard, but I think Jaime did a great job teaching it for the first time. Although he lectures straight out of the textbook, his lectures are easy to follow and fast-paced. He is very approachable and will explain things really well during office hours. He has great handwriting and his accent is very understandable. He gives out suggested practice problems that will help develop your understanding of concepts. There were two midterms and one final, all weighed together as 85% of the grade. The first midterm was pretty fair but the second midterm was very unexpected. There were 3 quizzes and 3 homeworks that were all weighed very little. He wants his students to do well as he will curve the assessments based on the average. Additionally, he will curve at the end of the semester as well. Overall, a wonderful person and decent professor. |

He is a good guy, very understanding and responsive to student feedback. However, he is just overall unaware- meaning he sets dates for homework and midterms and doesn't change them even when we are behind schedule. Also when asked questions while taking a midterm he is very unhelpful. Lectures are good to attend but if you have enough self-discipline to just read the textbook you will be good. |

He seems like a pretty chill guy and his lectures are ok. Do not be afraid to ask questions, because he makes sure that if someone asks a question, he explains it until they understand. He may be sassy but he does want to help. Sometimes his lecturing can get confusing or unclear because it is hard to understand what he is trying to teach us about, especially around the sequences and series unit, but otherwise lecture helped with hw and exams. I wish he'd give us formula sheets because it is a lot of content to cover and I don't want to be stressing about remembering the right equation rather than focusing on how to do it. We received 2 HW assignments each week based on lecture content and had unit tests (~6-8 questions) per chapter. I didn't use the textbook and just paid for HW because I don't think the txtbk would have helped much. Honestly, the TA that you had also could impact you a lot. I had a good TA who was helpful in teaching us how to do the problems and walked us through that so we could be prepared, but some TAs just kind of threw their students into it. |

Say all you want, this guy is absolutely crazy. I don't say much about grading because if you're good with a class, you're gonna get a good grade. He grades normally. But oh my god are his lectures fun. I've already taken calc 2 and need this course to fulfill a technicality but just sitting around in a lecture is incredibly fun and entertaining. He jumps around the material so you have to pay attention to whats going on. He's sassy about student's incredibly obvious questions and best of all, he's just completely nonchalant. This guy will have a student answer and state a whole ass question just to respond with "yes." Absolutely the goat. He also does no BS and gives everything to you straight up. The average conversation goes as following: "Question" -> "Yes./No./Huh?/eeeeeeh..." -> if you get the rare "eeeeh..." you are given the most BASIC explanation ever to your question. Also don't try to be a smart ass because he will outmatch you every time, some kids were asking some bs and this guy just told them to be patient and explained everything and left them speechless. Phenomenal. Take this class. |

Jaime is a contradiction. He is a wonderful person and understands math at a very high level. Unfortunately his teaching skills need a bit of work. He comes in as a foreign teacher so his notation and vocabulary is different than what I have learned in the past. I second the Pros and Cons review but will say, the HW questions are often nearly the exact same as the quizzes. And the Quizzes often show up on the Exams. So make sure you're doing the practice problems. |

Loved him as a person and professor. He was a little hard to understand and he didn't really post his notes on classroom which was a little annoying but I still understood all the class content. He was also always very understanding about personal stuff (he let me reschedule my final because of a family event). I don't know how to describe it, I just liked him as a teacher. I don't recommend him if you teach yourself some concepts because I definitely had to do that sometimes. |

He's an okay lecturer but a really, really nice guy. Lectures and exercises are straight out of the book and somewhat dry but he clearly understands the contents of the course very well and explains it well. I wish he'd spend less time on the proofs behind concepts (which aren't applicable in this class) and focus on doing more practice problems, but it is what it is. Quiz and exam questions are mostly modified textbook questions and aren't unfair, and he does do reviews for both if you ask. He's extremely nice and understanding and is always willing to break down course material more if you don't understand it. He's very willing to give extensions on assignments if you have a good reason and responds to emails quickly. |

I'd rate 3.5 stars. He gives good homework exercises, his exams are fair but can be a bit difficult, and he gives plenty extra credit opportunities plus massive curve in the end. Main critique is his lectures are exactly the same as the textbook, and I wish he would explain certain parts of the course more in depth. |

Very nice guy, who obviously knows what he's talking about when it comes to the math itself, but when it comes to general teaching skills, he isn't where he should be. Fall of 2023 was his first semester ever teaching, and as a result, simple things like explanations to confusing practice problems or MATLAB were sadly not his forte. Hopefully he is better in future semesters because of more experience, but otherwise, I would say try to take MATH241 with a different professor, as the content is already hard enough on its own. |

There were three tests, weekly quizzes, and one MATLAB assignment that was really easy and his instructions gave the answers. He also gives out a few extra credit assignments. DO THEM! They will definitely help your grade in the end. Pros: - Curved the class in the end by 2% - Gives out extra credit - Is really funny to talk to - Optional homework, but do it because the quizzes are similar to the homework - Helpful in office hours Cons: - Goes into unnecessary detail with proofs during lecture - Exams are really difficult - Isn't very good at lecturing - Teaching style is literally just writing what the textbook says - No practice exams for the midterms If you take this class with Jaime, you'll have to do a lot of self-studying with Justin's videos and notes but he's a great person to just talk to and super funny and he definitely tries to make sure that you pass the class. |

If ur coming into ur freshman year, you'll have a great time here. You'll make a ton of friends, have a lot of fun, and still get to enjoy multi variable calc for what it is. If you're a little older and and are just trying to pass a class, then this class is a little lacking in resources. You'll need to do a lot of homework and research on your own to prepare for the final properly. Jamie is a great guy, although sometimes I do get lost in his explanations since they get too conceptual, and are sometimes hard to relate to actually solving problems. Overall, the community in this class combined with the initial rigour it provided leads me to give this class a solid 9/10. Just try not to make any mistakes, he gives really bad partials. |
